Good teams spend high draft picks on big tough linemen on both sides of the ball. I would love a return to an identity of dominating the trenches. I remember Marty passing on future All-Pro guard Steve Hutchinson to select WR Rod Gardner in the first round, yet another bust. I'm convinced that Hutchinson, along with Samuels and Jansen entering their prime years, would have been the second coming of the Hogs.

Soup if we had a dominating trenches offense the people on this board would complain it's not like Brady, it's not like Peyton..blah blah blah discount double check.

Not anybody on our current roster.

How far back do you have to go for our last high round defensive lineman?

Hatcher and Cofield are on the wrong side of 30.
Check out the Patriots, they drafted many first round lineman that have been great.

Once people just accept this, nothing else matters. Join me (and to an extent Matty) on the dark side. We are where we're meant to be. #Fate #Skinslightenment

That could explain our situation.

We all know the true answer: It's Dan Snyder.

I blame everyone. Bruce Allen, Jay Gruden, Jim Haslett, Raheem Morris, and every player in the secondary.

I would consider completely cleaning house.

I don't buy the "we're just not good enough." I understand that as an answer if we're getting beat. We're not getting beat, we're completely dropping people in coverage.

In regards to the DL question, it's kinda loaded. We've taken a lot of DEs high and transitioned them, somewhat poorly, to LBs. When Orakpo was a rookie he got almost all his sacks from the 4 point stance. We have some great DEs on this team, they just got moved to LB.

Re: Blown Coverages - Who do we blame?!

for blown coverage i blame, in equal parts:

1. haslett
2. allen (for not adding a FS and thinking adding porter for 4.5 mil was a solution)
3. our secondary players not named breeland or merriweather

our secondary and RT were huge holes going into the offseason.

our secondary and RT were huge holes coming out of the offseason.

our secondary and RT are huge holes going into the next offseason.

so of course we will add more pass rushers to solve the 2 holes.

This is all so completely on point.

Re: Blown Coverages - Who do we blame?!

I know the defense sucks and they're banged up, but I think having a terrible offense doesn't help a struggling/banged up defense. I mean the offense was only able to put up three points off three turnovers. We gotta be near the bottom in terms of points off turnover, I know we're already at the bottom in 3rd down conversions.

No matter what we'll do to the defense, it's not going to matter if we don't have an offense that can sustain drives and score points off turnovers.

Re: Blown Coverages - Who do we blame?!

What really bothers me is that the season is over and even the young guys aren't even trying. It is as if they aren't motivated by job security let alone the coach's wrath. I said it before he was hired and I will say it again, Gruden is garbage. He is unfit to be a head coach and keeping him around for another year will result in yet another wasted year.

The easy answer is to fire him and he should be fired but as long as Mr. Snyder owns this team you'll get the same result with the next coach. Fck this team indeed!

You watch, when Orakpo leaves he will play well for his new team. That will tell you something about the kind of coaching that goes on around Redskins Park.

Re: Blown Coverages - Who do we blame?!

Per Tandler on who's to blame for blown coverages:

"You can’t fire all of the players so soon after the season ends on December 28 the organization will take a look at making coaching staff changes. Gruden just completed the first year of full guaranteed five-year contract so he is safe.

The same can’t be said of defensive coordinator Jim Haslett and secondary coach Raheem Morris. Many were surprised when they were retained last January after Mike Shanahan was fired. One or both of them might not be so fortunate this time around."

I think it depends on what position he plays. I think he's a mediocre standup LB but an excellent all-around DE. If he goes to a 4-3 team he'll have a big year - in my opinion.

I'm still sad we didn't go after Schwartz after he was fired by the Lions. Great defensive mind. Just look at what he's doing in Buffalo.
