Agreed, but I wonder what happens if the D all of a sudden shows massive improvement. (Against Miami, it might not mean a lot.) But if all of a sudden, the D becomes stout, what the heck do you do with Whitt? To be clear, I don't see how this happens -- we're now the 30th and 29th ranked D in terms of yards and points allowed, respectively, and we've been sinking lower each week. It would not surprise me to see us lose out (as sad as that would be).
I guess my question is -- DQ takes over as DC and then the D improves. At that point, how can you keep Whitt? I mean, for what purpose?

What if the defense shows no improvement, how can you keep DQ? He will shown he can’t hire a DC nor be one himself.

DQ isn’t going to take the fall for taking over an injury riddled defense mid season. Very doubtful there’s any huge improvements coming. Everyone knows this move is more for optics than anything.
