First, there are multiple nice sections of the city. If you've been to South Street, you probably stayed in Center City which encompasses several nice neighborhoods, from Rittenhouse Square to Old City. There are several other very nice parts of Philly like Chestnut Hill and Roxborough in the Northwest, University City where U of Pennsylvania is located, and Manayunk in the west where you'll find some of the best local music and bar scenes in the entire country.
Areas just surrounding the Center City area get rough. I work at Temple Health System, which is located just north of Center City, and it's very rough around here. West of University City is very rough. South Philadelphia is rough in sections. So if you found Philly rough, it's probably because the nice section you were in was surrounded by rougher areas. But if you actually visited other areas your tune would change.
I have no problem with ragging on Philly fans because they are crass and moronic. But don't rag on the city when you don't know what you're talking about. Saying it's transforming into Camden is asinine. Luxury condos are springing up all over Center City, the city's population is growing thanks to folks who are migrating from the suburbs into the nice sections of the city. If anything, Philly is growing nicer.

You are right Scheed, I stayed in City Centre and that part and the old town were gorgeous. I loved it. I loved how the people of the city weren't seperated into groups - either racial or social - that was great. But like three blocks to the west was not so nice dude! And no matter wha, t friggin Camden is just a $5.00 cab ride away! That place sucks.
I'd love to go back and see those better areas you were talking about.
