Re: The "Inside Word" on the QB Search

Seems that old Mel even believes we will be in play for Peyton if he's cut and healthy.

Chat: Chat with Mel Kiper - SportsNation - ESPN

Quote:
if the colts shop payton manning what type of market is there for him and could they get a 1st round pick for him?

Mel Kiper-
He's going to be free. It seems like they're going to keep him or cut him loose. If they cut him loose then it looks like Washington might be a team to make a big play after him. But he's coming off a big injury. There is some risk there. He's been in the league since 1998 and he's coming off a big neck injury.
Quote:
What's your best guess as to how Washington will approach fixing the QB position?

Mel Kiper-
Peyton Manning is the big option. You keep hearing they make a push for him. Mike Shanahan can't afford to misfire on another QB. His evaluation of QBs has been shaky. They went out to get McNabb. He gave the job to Rex Grossman. They went with John Beck. That all didn't work. Do they go after Matt Flynn? They might not go after him. RGIII in the draft is someone they'd have to move up to get. AFter him, there's no one else to go get. Mike Shanahan needs to start winning some games.

This would be the perfect scenario.

1) Sign Peyton Manning to 3 year contract.
2) Draft Justin Blackmon in the 1st round.
3) Draft Foles (or Tannehill if he's available) in the 2nd round

I would do back flips over this scenario.

Reminder: This is only about what I've heard. And remember things change. Also, this isn't about some of the later round prospects they have been scouting like Harnish or Dominique Davis

Current QBs

Rex Grossman: They've been working on a 1-2 year deal, but talks have stalled. But that may be because both sides decided to just hold off further talk until the offseason. I know there are other teams that have expressed interest in Rex (to the surprise of many I'm sure) as a veteran backup.

John Beck: Gone, but don't be too surprised if he stays through most of training camp. Particularly if Grossman goes elsewhere

Jonathan Crompton: Likely gone

Free Agents (only those who have been linked to the Redskins):

Kyle Orton: I'm actually not totally sure he's a FA, but the Redskins aren't likely to pursue him. Have heard the Jets are a possibility for KO

Matt Flynn: I know his name is the hot name being tossed around and everyone is connecting him to the Redskins. But I haven't had one legit source tell me there is true interest. Maybe there is, but from all I've heard it sure doesn't sound like it

Josh Johnson: Interest, but not as a starter.

Brian Hoyer: He's Restricted, but he's a potential sleeper. Papa Shanahan likes him (I can't speak for Junior). But he might be someone to keep an eye on.

Peyton Manning: None that I've heard of

Trades:

Jimmy Clausen: Very possible if the Panthers decide to move him. Redskins won't offer higher than a conditional 5th and he wouldn't be brought in to be the unquestioned starter. Skins have been monitoring Clausen situation since last spring when Panthers took Cam.

Mark Sanchez: Rumor was smoking hot three weeks ago but has died down a bit. Not as likely to happen anymore

Sam Bradford: This is probably choice #1. To figure out some way to get Bradford without giving up both their 1st and 2nd this year. No one knows that the new Rams regime is going to do, but Redskins are definitely keeping tabs on what happens there because if they can get Bradford they'll likely do just about "whatever it takes" to get him. Which is interesting, because they didn't want to 2 years ago. Though now "whatever it takes" is probably much less

Colt McCoy: Have not heard of any legit Redskins interest in him.

So I think Plan A is make a run for Sam Bradford and possibly add someone like a Jimmy Clausen/Brian Hoyer. Though Hoyer may cost too much to not start him. Bradford and Clausen! Could you imagine, how silly would that be. Plan B is draft a Jones/Tannehill and someone like Grossman or Josh Johnson is the veteran/transition QB.

My gut prediction as of today...Landry Jones (I know I've been saying Tannehill but I'm honestly going back and forth on the two) and Rex returns as the backup.
Not much discussion of Hoyer, but I agree with the assertion that he may be the Redskins' sleeper solution to the QB question:

Brian Hoyer - New England Patriots - 2012 Player Profile - Rotoworld.com

Shanahan and Belichick have an unusual/special relationship among NFL coaches. Hoyer has had an opportunity to learn the position under a top flite player and coach. Also, Ryan Mallett has spent a year learning the role of backup, and the Patriots have a reputation for not keeping/paying players that they really don't need. Would not shock me at all if Belichick lets Shanny have this guy for a bargain. Hoyer is a restricted free agent, as noted above.

Why would manning want to go from one situation where he is looking behind his back with a young QB in Indy to the same situation here?

Because one is a day 1 starter, the other is a developmental QB. Huge difference.

5 years, you mean 20 years? With the exception of one good year by Brunell and Ferotte along the way.

No love for Brad Johnson? Our only NFC East Championship season since Gibbs I?

This would really be the only scenario that I wouldn't hate with us bringing in Manning and Tannehill. I don't like either one of them as an independent option but I think Tannehill being at least 2 years from being an NFL starter and Manning likely having only about 3 years left at a high level, that could be a good succession plan. I'd love to see us get Blackmon, we need a playmaking WR as badly as a QB IMO. I'd favor this over any Flynn scenario and just below trading up for RGIII.

Not sure who that "young" QB in DC is lol? Can you fill us in?

More importantly why would Manning go to a franchise that doesn't project to be a winner any time soon. If he leave Indy it'll be for San Fran, which I think is his very best opportunity because he will win a couple SBs there, or possibly the Jets. Jets are a circus though and I'm not sure Manning wants to be a ringmaster at this point.
