Re: Jay Gruden hired as head coach of the Redskins

Gruden said at his first presser that he's a fan of the 3-4, I don't see why we would switch.

Re: Jay Gruden hired as head coach of the Redskins

He said it was a challenge to coach against the 3-4 also.

Plus, we did spend 4 years gathering 3-4 personnel. While most of the guys did play 4-3 in college, why have to revamp the entire D again?

The 3-4 scheme is not the problem. Our inability to gather a full defensive roster was. We never built a secondary and our D-line has looked good in Week 1 on paper but we never had the depth to survive a whole season on the line. The only solid part of the defense were the linebackers and now we have to replace Fletcher.

Keep the 3-4 and plug the holes. I really think Haslett could do at least an acceptable if not great job if he actually had players on the field. When Reed Doughty has been one of the keys to our defense for a few years, that's a bad situation.

Yeah 34 or 43 doesn't matter if you don't have the talent to begin with. Never understood why folks get so hung up on that. For years it seems all we heard was why don't we switch to the 34, we finally do and everyone wants to switch back now.

Exactly. The key now is getting the rite personnel for the 3-4. If that's what Gruden wants to run of course. Sounds like he does.

What an amazing concept.

I'd bring back Bill Musgrave for QB coach.

Re: Jay Gruden hired as head coach of the Redskins

I dont know whether adding defensive asst/positional coaching positions before naming your DC is the right move or not.

But it does seem odd. I would think the DC would want to pick his own staff or at least have major imput ... maybe the DC is in house (Has or morris) just hasnt been named yet.

It makes me think Gruden intended on keeping haslett as the DC but when he got here people in the organization told him to wait and think about it bc 1)the fanbase could get pissed if he is retained as the DC or 2) allen or DS dont want him to be the DC or 3) a lil of both.

If morris or haslett is named the DC I wont like it. the defense under Has has been bad and the secondary under morris was our biggest weakness this past season.

i dont know what they are doing, it could work out or it couldnt ... but this is a strange way of doing things.

not going through the process of interviewing all the potential candidates and throwing ourselves at the first legit candidate to interview seems .... like the skins of old in not letting a FA leave without a signed contract.

now naming an "outside" linebacker coach?

havent named a DC?

i trust allen to an extent ...... but this has been an odd, almost backwards process .. when we were told they were going to go through the process thoroughly and properly and it is going to take some time.

I imagine, if you interview 2-4 possible DC's and they all list guy x in the top 3 of their lower staff hires, then you would feel comfortable hiring him ahead of the final hire. Don't know that that is the case, but I think it likely that he got good marks from any candidates they are looking at.
