Re: Redskins vs. Panthers Gameday Thread

Seems very strange tonight that with the way the Panthers consistenlty blitz backers all night we never once attempted a pitch outside to our backs to negate the constant rush. Almost as if we either did not want to show our playbook or Zorn is a horrible play caller.

They don't know. Depends on if the 'sprain' is high or low. That has a lot to do with come back time, you can usually come back much quicker with a low sprain..have to wait and see. Another bad start for Jansen.

He's been getting beat for a sack in each of these preseason games. Sometimes I wonder if the window is closing on Jon Jansen.

Re: Redskins vs. Panthers Gameday Thread

I don't want to hit the panic button or anything, but I will make the following points:

1. Jim Zorn comes out of an organization that never did well on the road. He has to learn how to show up for away games.

2. Pass protection is a big part of competing on the road. You cannot play a team like Carolina and expect to protect the passer with 5 guys. It just doesn't work.

3. I see nothing in Devin Thomas that makes me care if he makes the final roster.

4. The Redskins have 11 days to GTST. If I were Zorn I would think about leaning on the run and maybe playing field position.

Our line is a smash mouth line that like to move forward.
I really think the transition of the oline has been overlooked
I don't think so. The running game is the same, and as far as the passing game goes, this 'West Coast' system gets the ball out faster than under the Coryell scheme.

This is a veteran line that has seen just about everything. No excuses for a performance like we saw tonight.

Yeah this is not good. Makes me wonder if the team should have gotten a lineman in the 2nd round instead of a 2nd WR (or Davis???). I just hope we have enough talent in the backups should he go down again (or keep getting beaten)

Damn.. over 500 posts already? ... All I have to say is that was a nightmare out there tonight. I think a lot of it was mental death.. it is just not a happy place for the Skins right now. We've had too much loss over the last year and I think the team didn't even show up. Their heads were way off somewhere else, thinking about pain and loss.

I REALLY hope Jason Taylor is ok... I love my Skins, and I think they will bounce back.

On points 2 and 4, I agree; though I don't think Zorn has given up on the run.

Zorn was the quarterback coach in Seattle. His responsibilities at that rank had nothing to do with how the Seahawks performed on the road. And you might as well get used to the idea of Devin Thomas being on the final roster, because their top pick in the 2008 draft is going to make this team whether his limited action in preseason warrants it or not.

I would have liked to see another lineman taken somewhere in the second round of the draft this year, but receiver was a need too. I also think they like what they see in Stephon Heyer, at least in spot duty. Rinehart looks decent as well.

You also have to figure that Jansen has missed basically 2 out of the past 4 seasons, so there has to be some technique lost along the way.

I'm totally prepared for the fact that they willl keep him, but it doesb't make it right. Bobby Beathard was much more renowned than Vinny and Walter Murray still got the axe. I think it would send a powerful message. That looked like a team that is in paycheck gathering mode to me. They need to get serious and Zorn needs to start making them get serious.

Also, Zorn as QB Coach was part and parcel of how that team performed on the road. And going to Dallas, NY, and Philly is a damned sight harder than St. Louis, Arizona, and SF.

"Part and parcel," or a "significant factor" ?? I just don't see how a bad road record can be traced back to the QB coach. If it makes you feel any better though, Zorn so far is 2-1 outside of Fed Ex Field.

Interesting note about Walter Murray. I'd never heard of him until the graphic came up tonight on the broadcast which gave us the Redskins' top wideout picks going back to Art Monk. That's not an impressive list, by the way. Penn State offensive tackle Andre Johnson was another first rounder who didn't make the cut back in '96. Though I think he still somehow lasted one season. It can happen, certainly. But personally, I'm not taking Devin Thomas back to the customer service desk for a refund just yet.

I don't know why the hell people think Devin Thomas or Malcolm Kelly are going to become Randy Moss and T.O. They are rookies and will not contribute that much this season. I hope I'm wrong, but that's what typically happens. We've improved our WR groups for the 2009 season, not next season. If we wanted to improve our wideouts for this season, we should have signed a veteran.

Re: Redskins vs. Panthers Gameday Thread

Time to shake this one off...The Skins will find a way to win this season and this game will be a distance memory.

No not spin, panic or positive thinking...it's just Redskin tradition.
Maybe we should revisit this post during week 10 of the regular season and see how we are rating then.

I agree 100%. Jansen has never been at his best in the pre-season, he usually gets better as we get into the regular season, around week 2/3 he's coming on strong in the past (when he was healthy).

However, after going on three years filled with injuries, and IMO this pre-season coming off a major surgery he just hasn't looked good at all. I think Jansen's time is running out, I could see this being Jon's last season as a Redskin.
