Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

Middle of the pack, and on the come. Again, no reason to rush into a decision now, but with the way it's going we'd probably be crazy to let him go.

I wouldn't rely solely on this information. Nobody thinks Ryan Fitzpatrick is a long term answer. But this definitely illustrates progress.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

No reason at this point to think we can't move forward with Cousins. Of course the last 7 games will help see things more clearly, but he's at least trending in the right direction.

Starting over (again) doesn't make much sense especially when you see what's out there for free agents/draft.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

Yeah. And like if we step back and look at the league overall, who are the QBs on the list there where you'd say they're rising and could become something?

You'd have to mention Winston, Mariota, Derek Carr, Bortles and you couldn't leave Cousins out of that. None of those teams would give up on their guys yet, and we shouldn't either.

Unless Kirk tanks over the next 7 games. But I don't think that happens.

Cousins has proved himself to be a starter in the league. I would have no problem giving him middle of the pack starter money at this point. I'm willing to bet on the progress we have seen- and move on to build around him.

IMO GM SM devalues the QB position relative to the rest of the league. He can live with that kind of contract as long as both sides are not too far apart and focus his resources on the draft.

I see us taking a flyer on a QB in the mid-later rounds to serve as a backup. I love where this team is headed.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

Agree completely. KC has been an average QBR -- but has shown some promise. Heck, he's made Redskins history in two of the past 3 weeks. He could fail horribly for the rest of the season, but from what I've seen, he seems to be getting better with more experience. He does better when Reed and Jackson are on the field. Who knows where he ends up, just need to play it out.

Of note, look at the QBs below him on that QBR list: Newton, Luck, Flacco, Wilson, Manning, Stafford..

It should be noted that QBR is of course a measure of overall QB performance, which of course is partially dependent upon the play of those around you.

Luck's been injured and his offensive line has been bad - everyone understands he's one of the best QB prospects moving forward, no matter what the numbers say. Russell Wilson, same thing. That line has been a sieve this year.

But yeah still, Cousins is proving he can play in this league. Keep improving personnel around him and he might be able to move that QBR from 60 to 70, then we really have something going. Basically just stay the McCloughan course.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

I've watched Cam play quite a bit this year and I think his lack of recievers is hurting his QBR. He has been playing really good football this year. My eyes tell me Cam has been a better QB than most this season. (boy I cant stand that dude either lol)

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

Kirk played pretty well in the first half of the season given the injuries and lack of the run game. Now that we have our full compliment of weapons, gruden said we were able to open up the entire playbook against the saints.

im wondering if 2-3 games from now, when coordinators have enough film of what our entire offense is supposed to look like, coordinators may be able to scheme better.

im interested to see what our success looks like when d coordinators have enough film to scheme and adjust to our full playbook .. assuming everyone stays healthy so our playbook can stay completely open.

Thats why they play the game. One teams best against anothers. Thats when execution comes into play and not necessarily scheme.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

The good teams have a veteran that is great or good enough, and they have a young guy on the bench to groom/develop for the future. So the transition when the veteran's time is up is not a bad transition.
I think we might have found the first part, an average/adequate veteran to get us through. Now we need to find the young gun QB to groom/develop for the future.
I think where the shitty teams screw up is they throw the young guy in too soon because of the pressure to win because they are shitty.

You don't think there's enough film of a Jay Gruden offense out there yet?

Despite what Jay may say, I'm really not sure where we did anything different against the Saints, their D was so horrible we were able to turn basic plays into huge gains.

I think the Saints game was the first game where Gruden/Mcvay finally, after 2 years, had all their pieces in place with a QB that can run the offense how they want it run. Unfortunately the Saints D is so bad is hard to tell what we did well vs what they did wrong.

finally we werent handicapped or scheming to mask our deficiencies and injuries etc. ..

i just wonder if after a few more games and more film we wont see D coordinators adjusting and we have some offensive production regression.

it will be interesting to watch going forward but this offense is different then the offense the past 7 games and last year imo. different in a good way. great way. as long as we stay healthy, no excuses for the last 7 games. all the pieces are in place. prove yourself.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

I don't think those numbers are realistic.
He is the best free agent QB and someone will probably overpay for him.

Alex Smiths contract is going to be the starting point ( 4Y @ $68M ) since they have similar play styles.

The wildcard in all this is the Eagles. Bradford and KC are both UFA at the end of the year. If they like KC more, they could overpay him and weaken a division rival at the same time.

I'm going to predict Denver will make a run at him and offer him $17M a year over 5 years.
