I guess Monte Kiffin has lost his touch too. His unit has dropped from #1 to #24. These things happen, I'll only get worried if Williams can't field a good defense next year.

I think theres a significant difference between 30 and 24. If we were the 24th defense, we'd be .500.

Regarding Williams, I think he's too worried about getting back to the defense he had the last two seasons than to actually change something to reestablish respectability. Too much of a perfectionist, not realizing that we'd be winning games if his unit was average.

With the money being paid, and his rep, I would hope that if he had a bunch of camp scrubs, he would have his defense in the top 25. This performance is unexceptable.

I'm not suggesting we fire the guy. Just suggesting that he's a significant part of the problem this season.

And if it is his perfectionism that is forcing his hand, that's a bit ironic because I believe it was his perfectionism that almost single handedly beat the Bucs last year. Who else remembers that he sat Shawn Springs because he thought his gameplan was too good to be beaten. Give him credit for that, he was right.

And now, that same attitude is killing us.

The people above him need to step in and hire someone who can make smart personnel decisions, and get Williams, and Joe Gibbs back to doing what they do best, coach their players.
Right. The biggest problem with the defense and offense and the team is player personnel decisions. GW has a large say in decisions. He was the one courting Adam Archuleta. The thing is: Everyone has known that this has been the problem in one form or another ever since Dan Snyder bought the team: No accountability in the Front Office, No GM. This is no way to run a franchise. The personnel moves have destroyed the continuity on this team over and over again. I hope that Gibbs is finally waking up to this fact. He is the only one who can force Snyder to accept a legitimate outsider GM for next year.

The players aren't the same without Gibbs running the show - period. He needs to take back the O.

So go from an offense that has been #1 in the league for years upon years back to an offense that required Clinton Portis to carry the entire load which also netted the lowest playoff offensive totals in NFL history. No thanks. Give Saunders time to get his scheme in. Gibbs had two years and our offense was consistantly shit. Let's try giving someone else with a proven system not designed in the 80s to have two years.

Re: Gibbs looks angry during press conference

he was pissed no doubt. I think he either had words or will have words with coaches - not players. Doc Walker said that Joe has never, and will never call out players in the media, so his opnion was that anger was directed to Al and GW.

If you read between the lines his "principles" rant was pretty telling. I think he preaches, preaches about a certain of type philospy and the product every sunday is differnet and he is now pissed. I loved it. If you didn't see the change in his tone and demeanor you don't watch JG close enough.

Re: Gibbs looks angry during press conference

I completely agree, Daseal. Saunders system is taking time to put into place, and sticking with Brunnell (and that, I take it, was Gibbs call) didn't help. One big problem has been the o-line's trouble in adapting to the new system. Saunders has a blocking system--it's Buges job to put it into place. This is not the Gibbs/Buges system of the eighties. Gibbs was calling out his o-line and backs, IMO, with his comments about not rushing. Saunders called running plays; the players did not execute.

But he did, for the first time, direct criticism at the D. I think the players are underperforming, but that was a way of crticizing Williams. And Williams clearly has large input on specific player moves--AA is his guy, and my guess is the reast are too. One bifg thing Gibbs said--and I completely agree--is that the D DID NOT GET THE BALL ENOUGH FOR THE OFFENSE. They didn't have enough plays. Long drive after long drive. If Campbell gets 10 or so more plays, we win, IMO. If you can't get on the field, you can't get a rhythm, and that's what Saunders offense thrives on. Of course, then they have to be able to run the ball--so the o-line has to get its head out of its ass and block, and Betts needs to hit the hole and hold on to the ball, or sit down. (I say start Duckett now, but we'll see...).

Gibbs was pissed. That was the equivalent of yelling by Gibbs. Behind closed doors, I do not doubt the fire will be lit. It may be too little too late, but it's time to play with fire, or get off the field.

Guys better start playing like their jobs depend on it because these last 6 games are definitely a tryout for next year. The lack of passion by the D is what's most disappointing.

Again, I think A solid MLB leader would help a lot of things, especially the passion aspect

Re: Gibbs looks angry during press conference

Whatever it is, it has to be internal. This team was so pumped for the season to begin. As soon as Portis got hurt and we signed Duckett it was down hill from there (emotionally). Wish I could have been in the locker room and heard the guys talking......

Re: Gibbs looks angry during press conference

I can't blame saunders for this game at all, we moved the ball on offense, he dealt well with the cover 2. We only got like 3 possessions in the 2nd half, pathetic.

That's what made me want to fucking puke yesterday. If ANYTHING, I wanted to see Campbell play, but NO, instead the defense lets them convert a zillion third and longs and never lets the offense see the field. I'd have rather them scored on a long play and just said fuck it.

Right there with you TMC. I've been feeling that way since opening night. It's like they let them dive into their territory, and you are like "ok, lets just try to keep them our of FG range". Then they get inside the red zone and it's "well, they are gonna get 3, but let's keep em out of the endzone". Then they score. And you look up at the clock and 7 minutes are gone. It's really the worst defensive scheme ever. Just blitz the house. If unsuccessful, they score off a big play, and you save 5 minutes for the offense to work with. If successful, you create pressure and maybe turnovers.

And having Carlos Rogers 6 yards off on third and 3 is completely assinine. So what if he gets beat deep. At least force the QB to make a good throw! This is the kind of thing I talk about when I say he's trying to be the best D. Sure if you roll Rogers up into press, he's gonna get beat deep sometimes. If you don't, he get's beat short ALL the time. That shouldn't even be a decision but we are making the wrong one.

Nobody dares run up the middle on us on short yardage. Take advantage of that. Get the LB's wider so they can defend the short pass. Do SOMETHING to improve us.
