I think it was the fact that, what, four guys left at once that rubbed the FO the wrong way. Then he wants to bring in his brother on top of that.

At the moment, a coach that can get you 14-2 are a bit hard to come by. Stupid, STUPID Chargers. Maybe Barry Switzer is available?

But that's thing, some within the organization felt that it was the very staff that he let walk was largely responsible for that very record. Marty didn't call plays on either side of the ball.

That along with the fact he and AJ Smith didn't agree on major personnel moves sealed his fate.

I think he'll land a job somewhere. Ultimately, the Chargers may regret this one.

How did Marty let the guys walk that would be a function of the owner or FO and not the coach. Yes, the coach could try to get them and stay but if the money and the job is better why stay. Thats why we gave Williams such a good deal there is no need for him to take another job.

Well, yes and no. He couldn't just stop them, but you have to figure when you have the TE coach, the DC and OC, and linebackers coach leave at once, something's up with the head coach.

Why not promote somebody. I'm sure Marty had some type of input.

Re: Schottenheimer fired from San Diego

this is the craziest thing I have seen in a long time. a coach rebuilds your 2-14 squad into a 14-2 powerhouse and gets canned after his PLAYERS fumbled away their chances at a AFC championship and possible a super bowl birth. The egos in the NFL reign supreme with coaches and GMs. the fact the offensive and defensive coordinators get jobs else where and he couldn't name his own replacements is crazy. I hope the team goes in the toilet. Marty deserves better treatment than that. He deserved better treatment when he was here! Who is going to coach that team now. I bet Wade Philips is pissed!

you do have a point. You would think a 14-2 team is pertty sound in the organization???

I think people the owner and the GM of the Chargers are really stupid. I would have fired the GM and brought in someone else. Marty does not call plays but neither does Lovie Smith, Gibbs, Dungy, Bill Cowher, I could go on and on. Lot's and lot's of coaches don't call plays.

I think where Marty excels is in practice. He likes to teach and I sure wish he was still our coach.

I agree. Living in San Diego all my life, I've noticed that as soon as a San Diego team does well (including the Padres) they start to either dismantle the front office or its player personnel. San Diego will never have a championship team without CONTINUITY.

As for the coordinator positions, promotion was really not an option; the only place to go is to Head Coach. Also, both Phillips and Cameron have been HC options for some time, and either or both leaving was certainly forseeable.

As for the TE and LB coach, it is true that internal promotions may have solved it. But, were these two guys gonna be the new OC and DC? or would they have to make multiple internal promotions to get the appropriate internal person into coordinators' positions.

Undoubtedly, the uncertainty of Marty's situation caused asst. coaches to look elsewhere. Whether or not more money or internal promotions would have changed this is, IMO, questionable.

I heard a rumor that they may consider Norv. If they fire Marty and give it to Norv they are insane.

I wonder if Carroll wants out of USC before the sh** hits the fan?

All I know is that whomever gets the job is one lucky guy. That team has loads and loads of young talent (Rivers, LT, the entire O-line, Gates, Merriman, Phillips, Castillo, etc.).

And crazy management/ownership to fight with every day he's on the payroll.

Cam Cameron got the job because when Norv left they wanted to keep the same offense in place. So it could be Norv or Mike Martz. Norv would be a good coach for SD. They already have solid vets on that team and self starters. Norv is fine if the everything is already in place and he doesn't have to be an ass kicker/baby sitter.

I blame all of this on the owner. Spanos is soft. He should have sat both of them down and laid down the guidelines. You do this and you do that. This is your job and you don't interfere here and you don't interfere there. If you get out of line your fired. Simple as that. You just came off a 14-2 record with loads of talent. Can't we all just get along???
