I met Teddy a few times. When he married Vicki about 17 or 18 years ago (I think), she was a member of my parish (Blessed Sacrament- right on Chevy Chase circle). Shortly after their marriage, he started attending the same Sunday service that my family and I always went to. Shook his hand plenty of times, and actually talked baseball with him on more than one occasion while Vicki and my mom talked about church related stuff. I was young at the time- 12 or 13 years old- but he was a very affable from what I can remember.

Hell yeah. I love Armands. I'm not usually a fan of deep dish, but their's is money. I used to go to the one on Wisconsin all the time. It's been a while since I've been there. They used to have a nice buffet where you could choose a variety of slices.

Actually I have a funny Ted Kennedy story too. Umm...not trying to one up you TTE.

I was working at Nordstrom in Pentagon City back in July '04. One Saturday afternoon this burly figure lumbered into the mens shoe department. He was dressed casual. I think he was wearing a hat, not too sure. From time to time, we'd get a Colin Powell, this Senator, that Congressman, Mayor so and so. Celebrity sightings weren't all that uncommon. We were trained to greet each customer entering the department within 30 seconds. I think I beat the other salesperson by a hair. It was never obvious we were competing amongst ourselves.

"How are you today, let me know if I can assist you."

The gentleman fires right back, I know exactly what I need. Two types of customers I always hated selling to were guys who came into the department with their wives and elderly guys who knew exactly what they wanted. The former couldn't be talked into anything, the latter couldn't be talked into anything. As was our custom at Nordy's you seat the customer and proceed to measure their feet. If you're keeping up, that's point number three out of Nordstrom's Five Point standard.

Almost immediately I noticed this guy wasn't wearing any socks. I thought to myself either this cat is homeless or he's fucking loaded. Look, I'm in a hurry. I need a burgundy captoe. Shit (I thought to myself), we don't sell a burgundy captoe! Sir, I'll be right back. On my way back to the stockroom I asked an older salesman, who's that guy in my chair? He said he looked familiar but didn't know who he was for sure. I shrugged it off and brought out four pairs of shoes and a shoe tree. Popped the lid on the first box. A black captoe. Second box, a brown captoe. A black, oxford, plain toe. And then the ultimate insult, a burgundy Allen Edmond's penny loafer. They ran about $225. Surely the burgundy would catch his heart. He stares down at me with this incredulous look while I'm slipping on the first pair. So where you headed to this weekend? Boston, he replied. Yeah, that's where you from? No, but I am from Massachusetts. What's going in Boston this weekend? How's that shoe feel? Don't like it. By now he's getting antsy and has no more patience for my Nordstrom bullshit.

It was something about his voice and that Bostonian accent. He was coy the entire time though. It wasn't until he was stepping onto the escalator, without a Nordstrom shoe, that it finally hit me that was Teddy Kennedy I was chatting with. Seemed like a pretty nice guy. Until this day I haven't forgiven Nordstrom for not having a burgundy captoe in stock.

Well if memory serves.....the original Armand's subway was owned by the Newmeyer's and located on Conn. ave in DC just past Chevy Chase circle on the right side headed downtown. They in collaberation (and maybe others) with my manager at Shakeys pizza on Rockville Pike opened Armand's Chicago Pizzeria on Wisconsin(after the staff was pirated from from Shakeys), and your right.......mmmmm good.

I grew up a stones throw from there, literally. I'm 31, and in my lifetime there hasn't been an Armand's in that location. I wish there was, though.

Coincidentally, there was a MotoPhoto right where you speak of that closed recently, and a pizza joint will be taking it's place very soon. Pretty stoked about that. I love that neighborhood. Basically anything you need is no more than a 5-10 minute walk away. Sherriff Gonna Getcha can attest to that. He's from around the way as well.

So am I, and this comes only a short while after the Avalon has started selling beer. The circle was already a great place to go, but it's getting even better.

Yeah, there were two on Wisconsin. One in the heart of Tenleytown just past Nebraska Ave, and the other is further north up Wisconsin, kind of halfway between Friendship Heights and Tenley.

Hmmm, how can we tie this into the thread... Teddy used to love deep dish pizza??

My college roommate and I used to go to the Armands on campus (AU) quite a bit back in the day, and to this day I still remember him getting the same damn toppings every time-pineapple and ham. That's one of my strongest memories of him actually, that damn pineapple and ham pizza.

And when he died in combat a couple of years ago, one of the first people to call his mom to offer his condolences was Ted Kennedy.

That's the best I can do..

So are you referring to that little Avalon theater a couple of doors down from Citibank? Across from Wachovia?
