there was no accountability. cp never wanted to practice and ah never got in shape. now that allen is here this nonsense is going to stop. if these two take it a little more serious and lead by example then the rest of the guys will follow. i like how allen mentioned that he's going to expect the players to give a higher level of commitment.

Some people can not be lead, by anyone, no matter what is said or done. How is Rock going to put a boot in CPs or anyone elses arse and have any effect at all. CP was above the law, knew it and had grown acustom to it. Doctors don't try and get cancer to work well within the body, they try to remove it while keeping the body as healthy as possible.

It was like night and day. When he first got there he was ready and fired up. After a month he was pea soup.

Great article and it highlighted what I've been saying all along, the chain of command was screwed up and it affected the team's performance.

This is absolutely what this team needs and has been lacking.

If thats the case what does it mean for Allen. Is he a true GM or just a cap guy with no real power? I think what powers Shanny's deal gives him will speak volumes as to how this might work out.

Re: Redskins lacked leadership, accountability - WP

Last year everyone knew that the O-line was a big problem. (It has been for a while.) It was discussed in depth by the WP and on this board. The problem was left to fester and we see the results. Although, not all of this team's problems can be blamed on the o-line.

This year we know Clinton Portis and the "Me-First" players are a problem along with the o-line. (This has been a problem for awhile.) The question is, does Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan have the ability under Synder to do what needs to be done.

In case you didn't know. (Yes, this is just my opinion.)

1) Get rid of Clinton Portis.
2) Draft O-linemen.
3) Get some decent FA O-linemen.
4) Put foot to ass.
5) Use players to the best of their ability.

Did I mention draft Tackles, Guards, and Centers?

As far as the TEAM, he should have power. The players shouldn't be running to the owner or GM, they should answer to the coach.

Allen's role will be just like it was in Tampa, just like Heckert in Philly, just like other places I can't think of right now. He will oversee the scouting and the overall draft/trade/free agency process (who's available, who to interview, who to invite for tryouts, etc). He will maintain order in the organization and provide Shanahan with information and insights and give him basically the best ammo to make a strong decision.

When people hear GM, people seem to think it means that one person calls all the shots when it comes to the draft/personnel, etc. When more often they are an executive who oversees the front office operations, but isn't necessarily the main decision maker.

So will Allen work for Shanny or Shanny for Allen?

They'll work with each other. But ultimately Allen will work for Shanahan. That doesn't mean he will never say no to him.

Re: Redskins lacked leadership, accountability - WP

Great thread! I enjoyed reading all the posts so far.

I'm glad players are speaking their mind but it feels a little like they are trying to side step the blame.
Rock had to step up this year and didn't. The same goes for Fletcher, Smoot, Daniels, Rabach and Campbell.

The team is much bigger than Portis or Haynesworth. Who was getting in Devin Thomas and Malcom Kellys face when they didn't practice or perform?

Who got in the face of Carlos Rogers and Laron Landry when they blew a coverage for the 3rd time in a game?

With all the injuries we've had this year a lot of young players had an opportunity to step up and only Fred Davis had a significant impact.

What I am most excited about is that the new coach and gm have no ties to any of the players on the team can/will be cut at any time. It's time for Devin Thomas, Malcom Kelly, Marko Mitchell and others to earn their roster spot. I would like to think that everyone on the opening day roster earned their roster spot.

There's a synopsis from a Cooley interview on that other redskins fan site and i think its very interesting that Cooley said Campbell wasn't a leader.
