Jason Campbell and trade value in the same sentence?

Ha HA......I think some people underestimate the skills of Jason Campbell.....

2009 NFL Free Agents

Top Quarterbacks
Age as of 9/1/10. All free agents listed here are done so with an optimistic outlook that a new CBA will be agreed upon. Accordingly, only four accrued seasons are necessary to obtain an Unrestricted Free Agency status on this list.

Kyle Orton, Denver Broncos (27)
Jason Campbell, Washington Redskins (28)
Chad Pennington, Miami Dolphins (34)
Tarvaris Jackson, Minnesota Vikings (27)
Kellen Clemens, New York Jets (27)

Re: Jason campbells trade value

Out of that short list I'd take Pennington over the rest in a heartbeat assuming his shoulder is rehabbed. Dude is the most accurate passer in pro football. For the WCO...lots of quick passes in the 10 to 25 yard range it's hard to think of a better fit.

I'd very much like to see Shanny dump JC, grab Pennington for our vet QB to start the season, and then start developing someone younger.

I think there's a difference between trade value and actual value. Based on how he's played and how other teams would perceive him, I think it would be hard to argue that he should fetch a high pick. On the other hand, I believe that if given a good line he would be a serviceable starting QB in the league. So therefore, I both think that he has little-to-no trade value AND would like him to be our starting QB for the next couple years.

Trade value is all about perception. For example, in Week 1 of 2001, you could probably have gotten Tom Brady for a 6th or 7th rounder. Ditto for Tony Romo through 2005. Today, they are both probably untradeable. Exact same QB, vastly different perceptions around the league at those different points in time. Thus, it is perception, not actual talent, that drives trade value.

I agree with this part, though rather than dump JC, I would tender him at a 2nd round rate. He clearly has the statistics to be valued at that point, and there are several teams who will dismiss his play here as the result of Redskins mis-management, a fact I am sure his agent would make quite eloquently.

I would be happy with using that 2nd round pick to get a young qb, and have Pennington, and Brennan in camp. Collins ought to be let go also. We would still have our 1st and 2nd to address the OL. This would be a good solution to me.

I agree, there are so many intangibles' involved as far as long range planning is concerned because of the uncertainty surrounding the status of a CBA.

I've said it before, Jason Campbell is one of the most difficult QB's to evaluate mainly because of the many unsettling circumstances within the teams framework that make a fair and unbiased evaluation virtually impossible. One cannot argue that his numbers have improved each year he has been the starting QB, and there has to be some value in progress. I don't think they will trade Campbell even if it is their intention to draft a QB for the future. Despite Campbells' shortcomings, he does have value if you look at his numbers in comparison. Speculation will continue to run rampant however until the draft, free agency and all other pre-season evaluations have been exhausted.

Ugh say hello to Brunell 2.0 if that were to happen. He's accurate because he rarely throws the ball beyond 10 yards. Might as well stick with our own guy who's shown he can dump the ball off, at least JC can scramble now and then too.

Jason also has the mobility to execute the boot-leg and waggle plays Shanahan is noted for. Get the QB out on the edge as opposed to being a stationary target taking a pounding.

Tooooooo many injury issues with Pennington at this point. JC IMO is our best option at this point. Im for drafting a QB to let him learn under Shanny system, while at the sametime seeing what JC has in Shanny's offense. We are not in position to challenge for a playoff spot next year, lets just playout JC and build a good O line next year

Agreed, too many holes to fill in one off-season, therefore putting our priorities in order is essential. Now, if we're fortunate enough to be able to get a good young QB for future development and fix the O-line simultaneously I'm all for it, but I'm not in favor of putting a Sanchez type behind an ineffective offensive line.

Re: Jason campbells trade value

First of all, the CBA is not going to be extended and Campbell will not be a free agent, so we can easily keep him in DC.

I don't think Pennington has EVER been a WCO quarterback. he's old and he wasn't that good in Miami before he got hurt. I'd rather Tavaris Jackson than Pennington and thats saying alot, because I don't like Jackson at all.

Unless a team is willing to give up a 2nd rounder for Campbell, then we would be foolish to trade him. He has two years of WCO experience and while no one really beleives he is the long term answer, he's the best QB on that list. As far as guys not on the list, if we did trade Campbell, i'd say Jeff Garcia (or even Jake Plummer) would be good pickups to start for a bit while a rookie QB develops.

Who wants to keep him as our starter? If your refering to the Poll on him I think it was kinda skewed the way the question was asked. It simply stated do you want to keep JC. I said yes cause I think we need a viable back up. Collins is too old. Now do you think JC see's himself as a viable back up? No, which is why I think will leave.

The only way I see him staying is if Shanahan tells all the QB's there will be an open camp and whoever takes it is the #1 QB. JC might be interested enought know Shanahan is going to give him a fair shake and want to stay knowing Shanahan is a good HC. But I still think if he (JC) gets the idea he's not going to be the #1 QB he will test the open market to see if he's going to be a #1 elsewhere.

Never know in Shanahan's system. Shanahan had the Skins retaine Anthony so apparently Shanahan likes him.

Re: Jason campbells trade value

Sorry, forgot about he no CBA issue so JC leaving is a moot point I think. Most likely the team will retain him until Shanahan can get "his" QB up to speed with playing in the NFL. I still think JC is the back up next year but could be starter until the teams "franchise QB" is ready.
