We were in South Nags Head at mile post 20.5. First time we stayed north of Hatteras Island in a while. We like it up here 'cause it's close to lots of things for the kids. Son was really bummed he didn't get to the NC Aquarium. Cool place.

WELL...the good news is it is still a lower level CAT 2. If it stays there that's good. Should not be a killer storm at that level.
If you can, board up the windows.....at least tape.
Basically will make a Hell of a mess....trees down..No power......water depending if your on city or well. If you have a pool, it makes a real nice water resource to flush toilets and it's ok to use as wash water as well.
You can also fill the bath tubs for water to use.
If you have a Gen set, even a small one will keep the fridge and freezer cold a run some fans (Major big deal with no AC).....microwave...toaster oven.
Get your camping stuff out so you can cook
NOW is a great excuse to but a new chainsaw.
Snakes and other critters look for high ground in events like this. watch out
GOOD LUCK.....be safe
AN Don't do any stupid drunken shit during the storm..it'll cost you

Taping your windows won't do anything, otherwise all good advice.

From FEMA:

Before a Hurricane
To prepare for a hurricane, you should take the following measures:
  • Make plans to secure your property. Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows. A second option is to board up windows with 5/8” marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install. Tape does not prevent windows from breaking.
  • Install straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. This will reduce roof damage.
  • Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed.
  • Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
  • Determine how and where to secure your boat.
  • Consider building a safe room.
FEMA: Are You Ready?

The only reason I am all over this recommendation is becasue growing up in RI when ever we got a hurricane or a threat of one my dad insisted on taping the windows. I would tell him it didn't do anything. Do you know what a bitch it is getting the tape off afterwards? It is awful I have the bloody knuckles to prove it.

I was talking to the guy who owns the gas station down from our house and he has sold 9,500 gallons of gas in under 10 hours. I'm not worried about running out of gas because I have 100 gallons in my boat if I need it.

Taping does not prevent breaking, but well taped windows will hold the shards in place in case of breaking. It's serves a two fold purpose, preserve window integrity for minor breaks and keeps shards together if integrity is lost.

But no, don't tape windows and expect them not to break. For that you need to cover them.

That is the eerie part of hurricanes it is always nice outside right before them. Another weird thing is when the eye passes over it gets all nice out then it goes right back to hell once it passes. I can remember a few from my child hood and the house during the storm literally sound like it was going through a exorcism.

I grew up right on the water in Newport RI (Aquidneck Island) and I can remember during hurricane Bob being huddle in the basement with my family all night/day long. My dad every hour or so venturing upstairs to check the house out, then coming back down and huddling/whispering with my mom as to what was going on and what to do. We real should have evacuated for that one but my dad stood pat when they came around to tell us to leave. I could see the fear in his eyes the whole time knowing he may have made the wrong choice. The ocean was about 200 yards from my deck and at one point the waves were breaking about 20 feet from the deck, at that point we had no where to go it was too dangerous to leave. My dad was just trying to decide if we should go high into the house or low. We stayed low in the basement but if the water got any higher we were head for the attic. We all survived no one got hurt but lots of damage to the house and property. I can remember walking out of the house after it was done to a sunny warm but damp day, relief flood my body.

In short don't fawk with hurricanes and get to a safe place when they hit.

I hope we don't get hit too hard down there because that's our place to get away. There is only so much you can do unless your going to go all out and board up everything which in our case would be very tough to do.

Breaking News from a press conference:

President Barack Obama warned people in the path of Hurricane Irene to take the dangers of the storm seriously and get prepared now.

"If you are in the projected path of this hurricane, you have to take precautions now," Obama said Friday morning. "All indications point to this being a historic hurricane."

FD, you've been warned. You cant blame Obama now for this.

Well the issue upstairs was the window and the chance of windows blowing in. Until it became a water/flooding issue the basement was a safe place.
