Re: Thoughts on the game
I don't have a lot of time, so I didn't read the whole thread yet, but My thoughts were slightly optomistic. I still like Rock over Nemo, even though I like nemo. I know the one int in the endzone was just a bad decision, but Ramsey did have a few beautiful passes. And he really didn't check down much. I think that was intentional though. I think they were just trying to work on the long ball. Still no offensive playcalling or gameplanning. The ball that Moss lost in the lights was placed perfectly. A couple of drops by recievers, but overall there was an improvement. I hope they can build on it.
Defensively I'm a little worried about our 2nd stringers. Remember we played with alot of second team guys last year. The line was allowing runners to gain serious yardage up the middle. Carlos Rogers did have a nice pick, but then got picked on. I wonder if Williams didn't see it coming. He got beat by one reciever on a go route, but the reciever missed the ball. I knew it was coming again when they put fresh legs in and barely huddled up. I figure in a game situation they would give him some safety help, but it wasn't there. I wonder if that was just to test him. |

Re: Thoughts on the game
I saw the replay last night and saw good and bad, I like what I am seeing from the O-line, they are starting to work together as a team up front, for the most part they did a good job of bottling up the blitz from the inside. Betts is running well, and Broughton is looking good. I don't think we are really looking to establish a running game in the pre-season, we are just looking the line over and taking a look at the back's, the primary concern is the passing game, when the season starts our offense will force teams to come up and stop the run through repetition and then open up the passing game a little more, right now we are not trying to wear down the defenses.
The big concern is Patrick's decision making? Both his INT's were ridiculous, somtimes you can't kill a QB on an INT because it's not alway's his fault, these were his fault period, those 2 throws were so bad it worries me, he did well in the hurray up, it almost seems Ramsey is better, more poised, and more accurate when he's just reacting out there and not thinking so much, I also think he's better when we move him out of the pocket, he just seems to uncomfortable when he's just standing there. I noticed with Brunell [who looked decent] that he was taking a deeper drop than Ramsey, perhap's the coaches should focus on that a bit with Ramsey, it may provide him with a little extra time, and a better view of the field, which may give him a much needed higher comfort level. Although he made some nice throws, as well as having a few drops, he looks like right now he's aiming the ball, I really believe Gibbs has really broke down this kids confidence, hopefully he finds it before he winde's up on the bench, because if that happens he may be done as a skin. Gibb's still refuses to put McCant's in with Ramsey, at the very least he should put him in when we hit the red zone, it sounded like that's what Theisman was hinting at during the game and his insistance on the importance of a big reciever down inside the red zone, regardless of the success Ramsey has had with McCant's the last couple of years Gibbs wont do it, I believe Gibbs has to make a decision on McCants, either play the guy and give him an oppotunity with Patrick, or cut him, watching McCant's work with the backup's in the 4th quarter is getting old, it's like he's scared Patrick might make the guy look good. |

Re: Thoughts on the game
Yeah, I'm not sure why we aren't seeing much out of McCants. I do think the red zone is where having a big receiver is vital - at that point, it doesn't really matter if they out run the d-backs, but as long as they are big enough to shield them from the ball.
Wow Offiss, it's not often that we agree 100%, but I certainly agree with you with everything you just said!

Re: Thoughts on the game
I think that Ramsey is going to have to get used to McCants not being there. I don't think Gibbs is delibaretly trying to sabotage Ramsey or shake his confidence

I think Offiss was referring to D. McCants.

I don't think so either, I just think he's being a little stubborn [Gibbs] I believe he doesn't want to reward a player for not being totally committed and send the wrong message to the rest of the team, and that is if your not totally committed you can still succeed, but if that's the case after 2 years then I think it's either time to play him, or cut him, which very well may happen, Ramsey may have a little trouble seeing the smaller recievers, which means get McCant's in there, or perhaps let him take a deeper drop to help him with his visiblity downfield, bottom line last pre-season McCants was our best reciever, and guess what? That didn't amount to anything as far as Gibbs was concerned, now he can't sniff the first team, all I can say is this whenever D-mac was in the game something good happen's between him and Ramsey. I used to coach both football and baseball [13 to 15 yrs old] and occasionally I would run into a kid who was very good but really a detrament to the team as far as his attitude, usually it was the fact that he was a clown and wouldn't take thing's as serious as I would like, and he would pass that on to the rest of the team, I would ride kid's like this, and I would let them know although I wouldn't let their talent be misplaced because of a personal grudge, they would have a very short leash, because IMO without focus and commitment success is fleeting and it's only a matter of time before they fall, and I think that's pretty much what's going on between Gibbs and McCant's, although Gibbs know's he's talented, he doesn't want to reward him for his lack of committment, but the time has come either learn to live with it, or cut him, I don't see any in betweens with McCants anymore. |

Re: Thoughts on the game
To me Ramsey was better this week than in week one. I still prefer Rock over Nemo. I was proud of the rookie 1st pick. He only got burned because of fatigue, they sent 3 fresh recievers back to back on him. Brunnel look very much improved and he could show ramsey a little about footwork his was excellent. pressure was on and nemo fumbled, not good from a compitition standpoint. Gibbs learned from the lessons of preseason last year, save ur starters. The defense to me played a little less than solid agianst the run. D line need to step up next game. last but not least patten looked very good, he may become a steal.

Re: Thoughts on the game
I just now watched the full game via TiVo. Here are some observations:
1. I think Mark Brunell is not nearly as bad as I thought he was last year. It must have been injuries that made him stink out the city then because he played decently against Cincy. 2. Patrick Ramsey is not a whole lot more mature as a QB now than he was at the end of last year. He still makes "bad decisions" and he still makes some bad throws. (NOTE: I didn't say he would never get better; I merely observed that against the Bengals he was "the same old Patrick Ramsey") 3. Rock Cartwright and Nehemiah Broughton are "fighting to see who will be the third down back". Here's the deal. Cut both of these lumps of mediocrity and bring back a 35-40 year old Brian Mitchell to fill that role. Even at that age, Mitchell is superior to either of those jamokes. 4. There is not NEARLY enough pressure on the passer generated by the DL. 5. The OL is 100% more effective in its pass blocking than last year. I never saw anyone get past Jansen all night... 6. The OL is 50% more effective in its run blocking than last year. 7. If you love Darnarian McCants, get him to autograph a jersey for you now because absent an injury to Kevin Dyson, he's not likely to be here in Washington much beyond Labor Day. 8. McCune can play LB. He may be the latter-day version of Sam Mills. 9. Boschetti absolutely dominated the guy in front of him in the late 3rd Q and early 4th Q. Is that because the guy in front of him was a stiff who will be outta town next week? Or is it that Boschetti is turning into a quality DL?

Re: Thoughts on the game
Ah! About time someone rained on the Nemo/Rock-parade. Ok. I'm not a Rock supporter particularly, given our short-yardage woes last year. But what of Nemo did you see that convinced you that he is a "jamoke"? What was hidden in the tea-leaves of your TiVo? (Don't think B-Mitch is gonna suit up...)

Re: Thoughts on the game
What have Rock and Nemo done to get ragged on?
They've both played very well this preseason. I'm scratching my head on this one, SC. |

Imo the whole offseason (roster wise) was directed at getting more physical at the point of attack (special teams) from Rabach to Nemo, White to the plethora of TEs we have brought in, they are here to knock to folks off the ball (just about everyone inculding these guys is good at special teams). And that specific physicalness (don't think that is a word...but you get the point) at the point of attack is why Nemo wins and Mich, as great as he was, is not what we need. |

Re: Thoughts on the game
Matty:
You know that I have thought for a long time now that Rock Cartwright is nothing more than a special teamer for a good NFL team. I have seen nothing to change that assessment in the first two pre-season games. Remember on 4th and 1, when Rock went for minus 5? He has done that a lot of times inside the 5 in the last year so I'd prefer not to have him handling the ball when it is absolutely necessary to gain 1-2 yards. He aspires to mediocrity as a RB; the Skins need more than that. Nemo hustles and plays hard, but he goes down with the first hit - once even from a CB who dodged a block and had no momentum going into Nemo as the hit was made. At 250, Nemo outweighs a CB by 50-70 lbs and that was where I expect a quality back to break the tackle. He hasn't shown me that he can't get better since he hasn't been here very long, so between the two I'd keep him. But I'd prefer that there were someone else to choose from. JWSleep: I know Brian Mitchell isn't coming back. But it would not surprise me to find out that he can still play 3rd down back beter than either of these guys. Now Otis Wonsley is a different story; don't try to bring him back; he's about 3 years too old!

I got the hell out of there after the 2nd INT. Thanks for reminding me of how bad Ramsey played against the Giants. My prediction. If Ramsey turns the ball over for any reason in the next two pre-season games, there should not be a QB controversy. We who love the Redskins should line up outside FEDex Field and not let Ramsey's ass through the gate. Time is not on his side at this point. If he's worried about losing his spot moreso than building a future hear in Washington, which I'm sure he doesn't want to do, he will continue to struggle in the near future. The presence of Musrgrave reveals that Gibbs isn't ready to give up on Brunell just yet.
