Who knows, in our lifetime we could see a kicker getting the Haynesworth contract, but that could be blamed on inflation.
Baseball was ruined because of high salaries and if this trend continues the NFL won't be far behind. Just look at small market franchises like Buffalo, Jacksonville, they might end up moving to LA were the NFL failed once before. Salary cap or not, when will it reach the limit for small cap market teams for them to be non-competitive? I think it already has for some franchises. If Shanahan is worth 10 mil a year what would Gibbs be worth if he was younger and on his prime?

The salaries AND the strike. Supposedly....the NFL is setup with revenue sharing etc.to help teams in the smaller markets. I agree that owners like Snyder drive prices up, some people have more money than sense, but didn't smaller market teams do ok before the cap? I mean, Buffalo went to 3 SB's before the cap didn't they? A lot of these markets have a bad product even with the cap because their owners don't WANT to spend. Fortunately other owners don't go as far as Snyder, if they did, we wouldn't have so much deadcap over these lousy deals we've made. Snyder always pays more than the other owners and it usually backfires. I think it's more Snyder than the league as a whole and fortunately no one wants his results. I think he makes a good case for not overspending. But hell...I don't know that much about it. I could be wrong.

SS has said before that SOME around the league think CB has some value. Maybe Shanahan was one of them?

This guy came into the NFL with the most impressive passing statistics I've ever seen in a college QB. People who wanted to discredit him said "well he played in a run & gun offense" like it's never been played in the NFL before. He has a side arm delivery "they say" and he'll have to change that to play in the NFL. Personally I don't care if he throws with no arms as long as he get's it there. If Shanny is the next coach and Campbell is not brought back, maybe he'll get an opportunity.

Madden had good things to say about him after watching him in pre-season.

I just wish they could bring back Chase as well. I really liked him and his poise in the pocket and quick release.

Yup. I like Chase, too. Maybe N.O. will let him go.

Two good young prospects that need only to be given a fair opportunity. Neither Chase or Colt would get that fair opportunity as long as Campbell is around. His draft status coupled with his contract demands that he plays ahead of either guy. We could have what may turn out to be a very good QB already in the building.

That and the advent of free agency. It wasn't as hard for small market teams to compete back then because through shrewd drafting they could assemble and KEEP a strong team even without spending as much as the big market teams. Once FA came in, the salary's sky rocketed and you cannot assemble a team over a long period. You have a couple years to get good before the strong contributors leave for greener pastures.

There is no way Dallas of the 90's, The Bills of the late 80s, or the Steelers of the 70s could have been competitive long term with free agency. Even the Skins would have had trouble since it's unlikely we could have retained the Hogs for a long period.

Good point Mc2guy. Free agency is the main culprit for so much turnover in the league and one of the things I dislike the most. I think you hit the nail on the head.

Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal

Matty has an excellent article about an uncapped year listed under Redskins News by Mark Maske. There will be tougher restrictions on free agency in an uncapped year.

Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal

Ross, if indeed Mike Shanahan becomes the new Redskins coach, I suppose he will bring the vaunted zone blocking scheme he used to run in Denver. If so, what kind of lineman are better suited for this kind of scheme and what made it so successful back in Denver?
--Ethan Sloan, El Centro, Calif.

I am pretty sure Shanahan will want to run the zone blocking scheme and have it led by an assistant like Alex Gibbs, Rick Dennison, or even Jeff Jagodzinski. Either way, the scheme works best when the linemen are leaner and quicker so that they can make the critical cut-off blocks on the backside of those runs that lead to the gaping holes.

I think Billick would take it but I would be shocked if Cowher did.
