Not Stephon Heyer. Noo.

Yeah, sorry, even I can't muster up enough enthusiasm to want to bring him back.

Unless we can get Ryan Harris or Gaither i think Heyer is our next best option.

Gaither already signed with the Raiders. And if we could get Ryan Harris here to backup Brown/Williams that'd be great. Heyer is very limited talent wise, and he's also the bigger/slower type that doesn't excel at zone blocking. In short, not a great fit.

A one year contract for Harris to play backup would be insane. However there's to many teams around the league that need to upgrade a starting tackle spot.

This. While I am no great Heyer fan, we need tackle depth. News from camp is that Capers is struggling. Gaither is gone and Harris may not want to be a backup. Heyer's departure may not be the blessing it seems.

Capers is no great shakes (never was, really), but I really like the Willie Smith UDFA signing, and think he could be worth a 53 man roster spot. I also really liked Xavier Fulton in the 2009 draft, and think he could be in line for a spot here.

There are, I think, two spots available for players who didn't make the team last year at the OL position (not including Chester), but potentially a third since Artis Hicks is hardly a lock to be back. So plenty of opportunity to bring in youth.

I want to keep him as a guard, don't know if this is his situation but more tackles could become starters if they bit their pride bullet and went guard, he looked alright there

I'd rather we get guys that fit Shanny's system as depth for the o-line. Heyer is a bigger, slower guy, not as big and slow as Dockery was but definitely not as small and agile as Montgomery is. If we don't sign anyone else for depth on the o-line I'd be okay if Heyer came back to backup at guard, but we all know he's plateau'd talent wise and we know what we're getting with him.

Not that I want him back... but given that he was an undrafted free agent, I'd say he had an OK career here.

He wasn't bad when he played guard for a spell.

I was thinking the same thing. He was VERY suprising at guard, sucks as a tackle but when he went in as a guard he seemd to be a little more effective. Not stellar, but effective.

I would actually prefer to keep him here -- he's not very high priced, provides decent depth, knows and is known by the other players...why get rid of him unless he wants a new contract?

Since he is a free agent, it is not that he WANTS a new contract - - he MUST HAVE a new contract.
