By not signing, he becomes a free agent when the new league year starts on March 14th. Kirk holds all cards here.

I don't think so as soon as they apply the FT assuming it is exclusive they have a hard deadline in July to which they can work out an extension. Basically he would be off the market and it doesn't matter the FT is binding so he either agrees to it or sits out he doesn't have to sign anything and there is nothing he can do about it.

No. If the redskins apply the tag he would not be a free agent. The Skins would have his rights for the year, but until he signs it the skins could rescind it. Once he signs it becomes an exclusive tag as Mattys earlier link showed, so that means he can only negotiate with the Redskins. The transition tag obviously has a different path.

The Redskins could apply the tag and see what Cousins does, but that money counts against the salary cap, and I don't believe the Redskins would want to purposely handicap themselves. If there was no deal with Alex Smith, then I felt it was a strong possibility, but now that a deal has been agreed upon in principle, I don't even think there's a 20% chance of a tag and trade happening. However, I've been wrong once or twice in my life, so we'll see what happens. Personally, I'm just fine letting him walk and getting a 3rd rounder in 2019.

You're right it does not. That's an embarrassingly poor display of knowledge by sandtrap. Franchise tag means you can't negotiate with anybody except the team that applies it, unless that team gives you permission to talk with somebody.

Exclusive Franchise Tag means that. Non-Exclusive grants the right to negotiate with other teams. The Redskins cannot apply the non-exclusive this year.

Well, let’s see how badly Snyder and Allen screw this up. Let’s rate this deal according to “Albert Haynesworths”. Like as of right now I think this deal is about 80% as bad as the Albert Haynesworth deal, so I rate it 0.8 Haynesworths. What do you guys think, And how good or bad do you think the cousins situation will end up for the redskins?

Correct. I was speaking of the tag the Redskins could use on Cousins, not of the one they cannot.

If they get a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd + a player, I am calling it a win. At the end of the day, Kirk Cousins had no intentions to remain apart of the team. This is a business, once he made that decision to leave the team, it is management's responsibility to get whats best for the team.

At this point...who cares if a deal didn't get done in the 2 years ago.

When free agency opens, I want our team bringing in guys that will be year next year, not playing chicken with a FA/teams. Want more picks trade down.

Why are we still talking about Kurt? Let's move on. He didn't want to sign here so we replaced his ass with somebody who did want to be here. Let him enjoy whatever franchise he goes to.

The reason to care about not getting a LTD done two years ago (or even least year) is, would have been a lot cheaper than tagging so freed up cap space, and we wouldn't have had to give away next draft's 3rd rd pick and Fuller for an equivalent though older QB.

Getting back a 3rd and a player now would just break even, and that doesn't count the extra $, and drama, and uncertainty building an offense around Kirk meantime.

And all this the result of a QB we drafted actually becoming good. It's like our FO can't even handle success.

At least we aren't making Kirk run conditioning drills to prove he's in shape for contract reasons, like Haynesworth. (yet)
