Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013 Part II
As much as we need a healthy starting caliber RT I hate the idea of bringing in another aged vet who may/may not play at a higher level than the scrubs we already have. But then if RG takes the kind of beating on drop backs he did last year we could well see another concussion or major injury. So ya, you gotta sign Clabo or whoever the best FA RT prospect is right now. Short of cutting Fletcher, any other possible move is probably worth it.

secondly, I'd rather have a player in the secondary and draft a RT and have Compton/draft pick/pashos/trueblood battle it out in camp.

Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013 Part II
Agree, Clabo's going to be 32 this year. Winston is going to be 30 this year and should have a lower cap value. Would rather prefer our recent trend of 26 year old vets that can give us 5 years of development than 2 years of overpaid retirement (I realize that a 1-2 year deal may be attractive given cap concerns this year). Andre Smith would be the prototype age for a free agent for us, but he'd be too expensive.
Ideally would love for one of the recent draft picks to settle into this role, was very hopeful for Compton last year. But perhaps otherwise Shanny can pick up a good star mid-rounder O-lineman like he usually does. A lot cheaper and longer lasting solution. The best O-line is a young one that stays together unchanged for the next 10 years with RG3. Last edited by ethat001; 04-05-2013 at 03:08 AM. |

I can hear Pashos saying in a Rodney Dangerfield voice, "I get no respect."

Yes that can be done, but the FO to their credit has avoided doing as much so the 18 mil penalty does not keep lingering.

Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013 Part II
I got a feeling that if he is close to healthy he will win the job, and from some of the stuff I have read he should be a good stop gap for a year or more.

Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013 Part II
The question should be how many 30+ yr old tackle do we need? lol At this point other than the draft or someone taking a super low deal I think we are what we are at RT.

Right. Lets be done at RT, FO already brought their guys in with the early signings. Obviously they got a plan, lets let it play out.

Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013 Part II
Twelve:
One experienced veteran who knows the ZBS and becomes our starting RT for 10 more years (at vet min each year) to satisfy the dreams of the fans; One rookie who knows the ZBS, starts game 1, has a pro-bowl season and becomes our starting RT for the next 10 years (at vet min each year) to satisfy the wet dreams of the fans; One experienced veteran who has good name recognition, but is disfavored by the coaching staff to satisfy the raving idiot fans; One experienced veteran who has a negative name recognition b/c of injuries, age or lack of starting experience, but is favored by the coaching staff, to actually compete for the position; Two second or third year players to compete for a spot on the team as a developmental player for the future to satisfy the need for depth; Four veterans of various ability and experience to be camp bodies and to compete for our "dear God help us all if he is starting" spot to satisfy the need for a body, any body, at the position; Tyler Polumbus because his name rhymes with Columbus and that's just cool; and finally ... Jabar Gaffney because he knows the system goshdagnabbit!

Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013 Part II
Answer: we need to try out as many Right Tackles as necessary to find one starter and one backup who can provide good pass protection for our Franchise Quarterback. If that number is two, fine. If that number is fifty six, so be it.
One reason I've been banging the drum for drafting Mike Gillislee of Florida as a Third Down Back is because he pass protects like Clinton Portis. IMHO, there is no greater need on our football team than to provide the best possible pass protection for RGIII.

Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013 Part II
I have a strong feeling Shanny just wants depth in camp and whoever comes out on top will get the job, the others will get cut. They will have a minimal cap impact since they were not top tier FA signees.
