Re: Hats off to Mark Brunell setting a NFL record!
not insults im trying to be realist not going overboard on beating probaly the worst team in football. we will probably do this again against the titan and that proves nothing. i hope this is a turn around game for the skins but i'm in the wait and see mode. show me something in three of the next four weeks against the jags, giants which stink and the colts. i thought we might at best at the break be 4-3 now i hope its not 2-5. its great that he completed 22 in a row but only about 5 were across the line of scrimmage you can be the texans and titans that way but against a good team i think were going to have to do more lets hope im wrong.but like i said show me enough talking about it. hail to the skins and mark great game and trent green did a great job here talking over for gus ferrotten when we were o-6.

Re: Hats off to Mark Brunell setting a NFL record!
I'll admit that he performed better than anyone expected. In fact, I'm sure Brunell didn't think he was going to break an NFL record yesterday, but I won't jump on the Brunell bandwagon, simply because he looked decent against the worst defense in the league. If he looks half as good against the Jags and Giants, I'll be first in line for some deep fried crow.

Re: Hats off to Mark Brunell setting a NFL record!
With the kind of guys we have, the short stuff makes sense. Randel El and Moss are both like punt returners in the open field. Nobody wants to take them on in space.
We will need to get the ball down field more often in the coming weeks, but in this game it just wasn't necessary. |

Re: Hats off to Mark Brunell setting a NFL record!
And Gibbs said as much in his post game presser. He was asked if the lack of long throws was by design. He said it was, given what they thought would work against the Texans D. Mark executed that game plan perfectly. What's he supposed to do, ignore the game plan and throw long? Also, props to Saunders for coming up with a plan that worked, given our skill players.
Sure, it's going to be a different ball of wax against Jax, but that doesn't take away from the play of Brunnell against the Texans.

Re: Hats off to Mark Brunell setting a NFL record!
MB had a great game no doubt. It is an impressive accomplishment, nobody has ever done it before and there have been alot of crappy teams out there. So no matter who it is or how you do it, it's pretty amazing.
And yes, i was a basher last week and i still have concerns that about the "downfield" thing, but props to MB!! |

Re: Hats off to Mark Brunell setting a NFL record!
The Skins had a game plan and came in and did something they haven't this year: executed.
Mad props to #8 for doing so and doing so in a way that no one had ever done before. That said, what does this particular game plan really say? -Does it say that the coaching staff does not want MB throwing deep? -Is this a game plan that will survive the Jags defense? -How much of what happened against the Texans was due to #26 being on the field? If you view a -3 to 5 yard pass (distance down the field before the catch) as merely an extension of the running game, then yesterday the Skins ran 95%+. Another area of excellance was 3rd down. This is a 3rd down league. The first two games, 3rd down ratios on both sides of the ball were bottom 5. Yesterday, they were top 5. Finally, for all the problems this year, at least we aren't the Giants. Giant fan has some serious problems to deal with.

Re: Hats off to Mark Brunell setting a NFL record!
I think the coaches realised we didnt have to throw deep to win the game! We did what we had to do to move the ball against the Houston D. The few balls we did throw deep were completions and pretty throws. Brunell looked poised and comfortable, this was just what he needed to raise his confidence. Although im sure these short routes will not slay the Jags D, with help from the running game again next week our offense will be just as effective. Im sure Brunell will be going deep more often and yielding excellent results!! (How great did Randel El look??)

Before the game we were first in the league on 1st down and 29th and 31st respectively on 2nd and 3rd down. To me that reflects bad play calling. Your players don't just turn into suckholes after first down. Clearly you are not putting them into position to suceed with that type of drop off in production. Better play calling on second down gave us better opportunities on third down yesterday. Kudos to the coaches on that. |
