Re: Keyshawn Johnson released from Carolina.

The absolute last thing this team needs to do is sign a wide receiver. And to hear Keyshawn say that he wants to help another team win a ring? Please, Joe Jurivicius had more to do with that team winning a ring than Key. Warren Sapp almost ate him.

Some interesting stuff here:

Inside the Panthers

Cap implications of cutting Johnson

Let’s do a little more separating the facts from fiction on the finances of the Keyshawn Johnson situation.

Here’s the deal: He was scheduled to count $3.25 million against the salary cap this year. Instead, the Panthers will have to absorb $3.75 million in outstanding pro-ration of his original bonus, but they’ll actually save cap room with this move. As part of a new rule this year, Johnson will be designated as a post-June 1 release. That will allow the Panthers to spread his cap hit over two years.

He’ll count $1.25 million this year and $2.5 million against the 2008 cap.

No $3 million bonus for Johnson

Let's clear up a little matter here before it gets too wide-spread: The Panthers DID NOT pay Keyshawn Johnson a $3 million roster bonus on April 1, as has been reported elsewhere and has fans scratching their heads.

The Panthers did pay Johnson $1 million April 1. But that was deferred money from the signing bonus he agreed to when he initially signed with the Panthers. Johnson also was due a $1 million reporting bonus at the start of training camp. Obviously, he won't get that money and it won't count against the salary cap.

Why Panthers canned Keyshawn

Here's why Keyshawn Johnson is gone:

Although the receiver, who was followed by controversy in his previous stops, seemed to be a model citizen in his one season with the Panthers, there were some-behind the scenes issues.

Some very important people in the organization weren't happy when Johnson failed to stand up and take blame away from quarterback Jake Delhomme after some critical passes intended for Johnson were intercepted. At least one very important person in the organization urged Johnson to do that and he didn't.

Johnson also didn't endear himself to some key people by questioning some coaching moves. The Panthers are on the hook for $3.75 million in salary cap space because of remaining signing bonus prorations. They may designate Johnson as a June 1 cut and spread the cap hit over two years.

The decision to part ways with Johnson actually was made at least several weeks ago. When a rumor was circulating about this move last week, Panthers general manager Marty Hurney told The Observer that information was "not accurate.''

Apparently, the Panthers wanted to make sure their bases were covered before officially making the move, and the clincher came when they drafted USC's Dwayne Jarrett in the second round Saturday.

Re: Keyshawn Johnson released from Carolina.

You could probably say this about 80% (or more) of the off-season threads but this one is worthless because the Skins will not bring him in and he would not sign here anyway. Mark it down.

Grim -

How do I explain his lack of production in Dallas? Well he averaged 70.5 receptions and 910 yards per year in his two seasons there. How is that unproductive? He isn't Jerry Rice, but he is a very solid 2/3 and your hatred of him is misplaced (maybe stemming from the his book or his getting 'Keyshawned' in Tampa, not sure exactly). I'll undoubtedly take some heat for this, but his career numbers actually match up quite favorably with Art Monk's so the only problem you could have with the guy is his attitude (which I don't see as a problem these days) rather than his production. But, again, he will not be a Redskin any time soon.

By the Numbers:

Keyshawn's Avg. Production Per Season through 11 Seasons:
74 Rec., 961 yds, 5.8 TDs

Art Monks Avg. Production Per Season in 15 Seasons (excluding final year in Philadephia):
62 Rec., 848 yds, 4.5 TDs

Art Monk's Avg. Production in his first 11 Seasons:
66 Rec., 903 yds, 4.72 TDs

And Keyshawn has been amazingly consistent. Not advocating his signing here, just pointing out that you cannot bash his production if you look at the numbers.

I hate to be the first one to point this out, but you are obviously not versed in the Redskins' Nation Monk for the Hall Party Line. Monk played in a completely different era where passing yards for receivers where nothing like they were during the time that Keyshawn compiled those stats. Not trying to take away from Keyshawn- because I think he has had a solid career and wouldn't mind him here because he fills a niche that no one else on our team currently does- but you should definitely not drag Monk's hallowed name, or stats, into this discussion.

Secondly, if I hear someone else say that we have a great WR corp I'm going to get belligerent. We DO NOT have a stand out receiving corp outside of Santana by any stretch of the imagination, and it actually is insulting to me that anyone could utter that regrettable opinion.

Has anyone told you about the fact that we have one of the best receiving corps. in the NFL?

Re: Keyshawn Johnson released from Carolina.

1 year vet minimum it's a no brainer. Can't pass him up.
If he's expensive or mildly expensive pass.
70 catches and 4 tds is worth a look. He might wanna be a Skin.
I'm thinking Nawlins might be interested.

We have a good over the middle pass catcher who can block and is very effective in the red-zone. #47 anyone??

Isn't Keyshawn the same guy who wrote a book telling teams to "get him the damn ball" ??? If we sign him and make him a #3, the we'll have a the most expensive #4 in league history. We need to build continuity and stability with this offense, especially with Campbell and the WRs. Bringing in a 34 year-old malcontent who will end up bitching when not enough passes come his way is just an awful decision. IMO
You are obviously a stat happy guy. Now when McCants was here they hardly threw him the ball but when they did he came down with it. Rarely was the ball thrown his way and he didn't come down with it and I'm not just talking about Madden either. It's not so much having someone to catch passes over the middle, it's about taking pressure off of the other skill players. Yeah you're right we have Chris Cooley and also Santana but seriously did Lloyd make you feel all fuzzy inside by how much attention he drew to himself ? Maybe so, but not me. Johnson will garner attention from opposing defenses which will in turn free up Sanatana and Cooley. Oh yeah and Keyshawn wrote that book in 1997,...10 years ago. So basically your against it because of the money that is already in our top 3 receivers ? I just see Johnson as an asset because he is a proven WR and he's 6 fn 4 !

James Thrash blocks, plays teams and keeps his mouth shut.
Thrash can't get on the field because his career is about over. I like Thrash on teams, but lets not act like he's out there for even 1/4 of our offensive plays. Keyshawn isn't worth bringing in for us, but he has definite upsides for a team that needs a 2nd or 3rd option.

Yes, well filial piety has a way of making certain topics untouchable doesn't it? Not saying Keyshawn is better than Monk, but people keep talking about how horrible Keyshawn is but that is based on personal prejudice rather than empirical data. Apologies for my irreverence, I guess I should just let sleeping dogmas lie.
