Re: Peter King on The Skins - Future Cap Trouble

Remember last year when Pasta predicted we would field a team with 20 undrafted free agents, and without our key players? Yeah, how did that turn out. We were under the cap BEFORE the new collective bargaining agreement was signed.

I'm not a math guy and I don't understand all these numbers, but I do know that the doomsayers have been consistently wrong EVERY YEAR when it comes to forecasting doom for the Skins.

Schneed and CC! Thanks guys for your help in explaining the numbers to us. I'm not a math guy either. I'm an IT guy, so you know I only think in binary...LOL!

But seriously, we hear the same exact thing from the same exact sports writers year in and year out. They seem to start doing the most skawking when the Redskins have a bit of a losing streak. We've done pretty good about keeping the bulk of our team together for the most part. I don't see us having to blow the team up anytime soon either.

I was against the Jansen restructuring because I didn't know that he had two years left in him. The good news is that, by the time we find out if thats true, those two years will have passed and it will be possible to go another direction with JJ if he has a subpar or injury riddled 2008.

Once you convert base salary into a signing bonus, that is the ultimate vote of confidence in your guy. Do that to too many people, and you pretty much have no roster flexibility whatsoever.

Because of this, the 2008 Redskins are going to look a lot like the 2007 Redskins.
Good way to put it. I remember last year when Jansen got his extension, and then Randy Thomas got one, and of course Samuels had his the year before Jansen. So you could really see the financial committment to those guys. When a team gives big dollar extensions to players later in their careers, that means they love them. The Skins haven't made that committment to any other guys their age in a while. And no surprises there, those three are thought of as huge leaders on the team, and the coaching staff loves all three of them. Too bad two of them got hurt so badly.

Especially Randy Thomas. Have I ever mentioned that I heart Randy Thomas?

does this guy have a f#ckin' life ... all he seems to do is rip on this team and deny our players access into the hall... maybe Danny boy pissed in his cornflakes a while back... I refuse to listen to a guy who has never played the game

Absolutely. I'd rather see both of them remain on the roster with Moss and ARE and then keep someone like Farris or an undrafted wr next year and let him learn from some graybeards. Personally, I have always been a fan of KM and would like to see him play for 2 more years. The knock on him is that he doesn't play ST very well and is no longer a viable week after week #1.

Do you think that Gibbs/Cerrato are massaging the numbers and pushing off the effect of our spend thrift ways because they know they won't be around when we actually feel the effect?

I'm not suggesting that they are sabotaging the team on purpose but rather are doing it out of a sense of desperation and because of an overwhelming pressure to win now. Let's face it, we as redskins fans aren't exactly the most patient or forgiving bunch.

I don't think that's the case at all. Since Snyder bought the team this is how they've handled the cap.

The last thing Gibbs wants is to leave the team in worse shape than when he took over.

No I don't think that's the case at all. If you crunch the numbers, consistently over the past 3 seasons they've left themselves about 20% under the cap, with room to drop 30% through restructures, leaving them with about 10% to work with each year. These percentages are pretty consistent, and that can't be an accident.

They've got the opportunity to set themselves up for something similar in 2009 if they clear enough off the books this year.

Positive rep points for apologizing, water under the bridge. We shy away from dup threads, especially on a subject that takes some work to discuss with meaning. Once I crunch the numbers once, I prefer to not be required to do it again!

We'll be in good cap shape. Writers don't understand accounting, that's why they're writers.

the cap thing must be the in thing to say about the skins. i was watching the Dallas game with a good friend of mine( who is also a big time cowboys fan) and he must have said that a half dozen times. i kept trying to tell him that d day isn't coming, and that the skins have the best cap management team around. he just wasn't buying into it

I agree. No matter what anyone thinks, Dan Snyder has got some highly qualified cap specialists working for him. We've been in jeapordy every year. And it's always a story.

Until we resign everyone with big up front bonus'. and 7 year contracts. Relax. Money is not something you have to worry about.

Send him a link to this thread.

Eh, he probably wouldn't understand, he's a Cowboys fan. Better yet, let's just send CC to kick his ass.
