Carter? He's our best pass rusher but he's not in the class of some of the top pass rushers in the NFL. So again, not worth the $ he's being paid. |

First off, cutting Jon Jansen would actually cause a cap hit instead of saving money. And given that he's still our starter at RT, I have no earthly inkling why we would do that. But more importantly, cutting players is not the only way to drop salary from your cap. Daniels and Brunell are the two guys that will yield significant savings from being cut, otherwise the benefit to cutting other players is far outweighed by keeping their skill set on the roster. We can save significant amounts of cap money (up to $27.5 million), should we choose to, by restructuring the base salaries and roster/workout bonuses of the following players: Keeping These Players, Restructuring 2008 Base Salary, Prorating over Remaining life of Contract: Randy Thomas - $4.3 million saved Clinton Portis - $3.8 million saved Jon Jansen - $3.7 million saved Chris Samuels - $3.4 million saved Cornelius Griffin - $2.8 million saved Santana Moss - $2.4 million saved Casey Rabach - $1.8 million saved Total Salary Restructure Savings: $22.2 million Keeping These Players, Restructuring 2008 Roster Bonuses, Prorating over Remaining life of Contract: Ladell Betts - $1.7 million saved Clinton Portis - $0.4 million saved Andre Carter - $1.9 million saved Antwaan Randle-El - $1.2 million saved Total Bonus Restructure Savings: $5.2 million

Carter's being paid "good defensive end" money. Freeney is being paid elite DE money. ARE is debatable and I agree we're probably overpaying a bit, but not by that much. Do I need to pull contract values on elite WRs? I don't think we're overpaying by enough to label him as a bust. I'll compromise with you and call him a mild disappointment so far.

It's already been said, but successful teams are built from the lines up. That's the foundation and without it, everything else is smoke and mirrors.

Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
Everybody wants the sexy pick. But the games are still won in the trenches. I would be very happy if we could draft a quality guard to replace Kendall, and a pass rushing DE to replace Daniels. Chris Long would look real good in burgundy and gold. I love that guys mentality. He's a leader, and he's got a mean streak just like his dad.

Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
I think that the redskins need to go straight from the draft and stop buying every single player that looks good at the time. We did that with Lloyd and Archuleta and haven't done shit. If you go from the draft you can get talented rookies to play the positions the skins need the most and the coaching can build them up to be great players.

Free agency can work if you get the right players and use them to compliment draft picks. The problem that the Redskins have had is trading away their picks more than "buying every single player." To a large extent that is a tired retort from people who don't follow the team (such as yourself) and a vestige of the Danny's early days in D.C. Andre Carter, London Fletcher, Fred Smoot, Randy Thomas, Casey Rabach, Cornelious Griffin, Marcus Washington, Shawn Springs, etc. have all worked out pretty well in D.C. I might mention a team you're more familiar with (despite your very very clever attempt to hide your affiliation) and their signing/trading for Adalious Thomas, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, etc. Go find a Patriots board dude, or at least get a better name, PerkyPerk makes me think I should hate you. Then your comments just confirm that.

Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
wow lots of good points, thoughts and number-crunching research by everyone, i apreciate the educaton.
my thoughts, we will need help at CB, Oline, D line, safety, and to some degree a bigger WR. - good o-line guys can be found outside of the draft (kendall, thomas, rabach all came from frugal smart pick ups) - CB theres talent in FA for immediate help or we can draft a guy and pay him to not contribute for the first year or so - D line, might have to look at the draft but none of last years 1st round guys have had an impact on their teams - O line, i really like picking these guys up in the 2nd - 5th round of the draft go skins! |
