Re: Overall Draft Grade for the Redskins

Had we selected DE Calais Campbell instead of TE Fred Davis in the 2nd round, then this would be a solid A in my book. I haven't seen anyone else who had Fred Davis rated as a first round talent, yet we graded him that high. If Calais drops 10-15 lbs and develops into the dominant DE that he projected two years ago, we'll regret following our draft board to the T when it came to selecting Davis.

FoXSports.com (1st round, 24th overall)

FOX Sports on MSN - COLLEGE FOOTBALL - CFN's 2008 NFL mock draft

In at least one of Kiper's mocks he had Davis going 25th to the Seahawks. So Davis wasn't a sleeper necessarily.

B. A on value, but i don't think any of the players (beyond the punter) are anything special, and we didn't get a DE either.

i do think 7 of these players can make the roster pretty easily though, so that's a good sign. we only got receiving, a punter, and db depth though out of 10 picks.

still, giguere, henderson, hardie, haynos, and highsmith could really help us out as UDFAs. our LB depth could be fixed solely by 8th rounders and hardie could easily get a backup DE spot on this roster.

i too, would have liked campbell (btw, if he wasn't drafted, he'd be heading to iraq right now (army)), but he won't lose 10 lbs and turn into a sack machine. he's the slow run stopping type (like wynn or daniels). run stoppers just don't get labelled dominant. merling is the same type, just a bit better/faster.

oh yeah, it's pretty funny GB had another top 15 QB drop into their laps... why do they have it so easy up there... favre, hasslebeck, brunell (when he didn't suck), bart starr, i mean... damn. I think brohm probably sends rodgers back to the bench this year or next...

You sure you're not thinking of Caleb Campbell?

yeah, my bad. see what happens when you have to work 7-7 on weekends?

btw, you're now a level 3 CB, so start putting the smackdown on those receivers.

I'm not getting paid like a level 3, I may have to hold out. My agent, Sheriff Gonna Rosenhaus, will be in touch.

I'm OK with drafting Davis if they think he's going to be a good player. From what I saw he sure looked good at USC. But let's be real. First, this guy is not going to be an everydown player for us. With that pick we could've perhaps got a DE to walk in and start right away. And two we've already got pro bowl TE. So that limits Davis' playing time. I like the player but I just don't see him being a need for us. Makes no sense.

It makes sense if Zorn plans on using plenty of two TE sets, no?

You're right. I suppose we had more needs, if nothing else for depth, than we did picks. Oh well, that puts us in company w/ just about every other team in the league.

Re: Overall Draft Grade for the Redskins

Overall, I give it a B-, I'll break my thoughts down by pick and wrap up with an overall:

Devin Thomas: 2nd Round Steal very good pick

Fred Davis: WTF...lol in all honesty though I've started to warm up to him a little bit, my understanding is he was a guy a lot of people thought would go in the first round, and from what I've heard Zorn seems to think that Davis and Cooley can exist in the same formation.

Malcom Kelly: I hear he's another steal, everyone says that the skins may have gotten the two best Receivers in the draft in him and Thomas, and lets be honest, outside of Moss and ARE we aren't exactly deep at the Wideout position right now.

Chad Rinehart: Finally a Lineman, and from what I hear a versatile one that can move between the Tackle and Guard positions fairly easily.

Justin "J.T." Tryon: Hope he's got speed, because he's very short 5'9", but we need CB's and someone thought he was the best one there at the time so who knows.

Durant Brooks: Finally someone who might be able to actually punt.

Kareem Moore: Another smaller dude at 5'11" but we need DB's and he was there.

Colt Brennan: Another possible steal, if nothing else, hopefully that solves the problem of a third stringer...

Rob Jackson: Possibly another Chris Wilson type DE?

Chris Horton: Just adding depth at DB

Overall I would like to have seen more Linemen on both sides of the ball, still not entirely sold on the Davis pick, but maybe that's the big reason I'm on here running my mouth while Cerrato is up there putting together a team. In any event, Zorn says he can make it work, so who knows. Hopefully we can find something after the June 1st cut down, but I have always been a little leery of taking one man's trash and trying to make it our treasure.

Yeah we have a history of making such horrible decisioins when we draft. Even the biggest haters know that's not true

OK, so then what do we need Thomas and Kelly for if we have Moss, El, Thrash, Mix? Which is it? I agree Fred Davis was a bit of a head scratcher but hardly a terrible pick. As for picking DEs, maybe but at that point we don't take one just to take one.

We had depth issues at several positions, and addressed plenty of them. Marcus Howard is fine, but we have Chris Wilson who is versatile enough to play both positions.

McGlynn's better because he's from a bigger program?

Yeah I think the pick was probably a bit high, but Frost was hardly tremendous

And the irony is he tops it all off by praising the Brennan move while taking a shot at Campbell.

This draft wasn't perfect, but awful?? No way
Let me ask you this. Do you think Pioli of NE, or Polian of Indy would offer basically 2 #1's for Chad Johnson? Or draft 2 young wr's back to back when you've already got a lot of $ tied up in two other guys? Or draft a TE in the second round when you've already got a pro bowl TE and you have a major need at DE? And Brennan was just a waste. No way do you even waste time on him. I mean some of these moves Vinny is making really is making me wonder. I don't think we had an awful draft. I just think it could've been so much better.
