Re: Portis to play Saturday - he doesn't seem too happy about it
I think Portis should play, just not much. He needs some time in a real game environment to get ready for the season. And it's not like he'll be playing an entire game, or an entire half, for that matter. Just a few series and then he'll be done.

Re: Portis to play Saturday - he doesn't seem too happy about it
I'll say just what I said when I called in to the Sports Reporters on ESPN 980 this afternoon -- the risk of getting injured in a worthless preseason game is far greater than "not being ready" come Sept. 4th (which I don't believe for one minute). If he's "not ready" for the Giants, 5-10 plays in two or three exhibition games isn't going to change that.
Ultimately, the preseason is for discovering bloodthirsty rookies who can make the roster -- not for six-year veterans. |

Re: Portis to play Saturday - he doesn't seem too happy about it
I belive it's also to learn any new offenses, and......build endurance. 4 games with 4 quarters...which means starters should be playing ...IMHO....1st quarter 1st game, 2 quarters for 2nd game and so on until the last game where they should be playing or be able to play 4 quarters. but....usually the last game is to decide who stays on the team and who gets cut so basically the last game for starters is almost a waste. That leaves 3 games the starters need to build on what they have so Zorn can play the crap out of the rookies come game 4.

Re: Portis to play Saturday - he doesn't seem too happy about it
If the rushing attack really hasn't changed under Zorn then I don't see the need for CP to take a snap during preseason; however, if he is going to take some work then it ought to be w/ the first team o-line only. I say this because the reserves, especially 3rd stringers, are way more likely to miss a cue, a block, take a misstep or do something else that could lead to an injury to the RB.
Second, I think Betts should take a shit load of carries. Thing about him is that he needs to develop some rhythm for the season to be successful, and if CP gets injured at some point it'll help that Betts has a ton of touches. After that I'd just run Mason to see how much he can take. (I'm sick of watching Rock as a RB, no offense to Rock fan group).

Re: Portis to play Saturday - he doesn't seem too happy about it
If coach Z, (ugh! reminds me of Dr. Z) says "Clinton, take some pre-season reps."; then he needs to take some reps. The coach is always right. However, all that aside, I think Clinton brings a very special talent to our team and shouldn't run unless the game is meaningful. Plenty of RB's come into a "new system" or new team year in and year out and many of them perform fine. Clinton is finding his groove and knowing his lanes during practise. Pre-season may get him slightly better prepared for game speed conditions, but any athlete knows that when the whistle blows you are in game speed from the get-go.
So, after all that, I say "No" Clinton should not play in the pre-season unless there are a couple of specific plays that Zorn needs to see that he can run with confidence against the Giants in week 1.

He's a prima donna. When did he become bigger than the team. Did Riggo sit out the preseason? There's a new sherrif in town. Suit up and play Clinton.

I'd rather sit-out Santana Moss. He's more critical to the offense than Clinton.

Re: Portis to play Saturday - he doesn't seem too happy about it
I've thought a lot about this before posting and I think Porits was just being Portis. He doesn't want to risk injury and he doesn't want to not give it his all and he dosen't want to look like as ass either. He's being him.. make him play and he'll play at 100 percent.. there's no other Portis. To me this is all about ego.. and that sums up Clinton Portis.

Re: Portis to play Saturday - he doesn't seem too happy about it
if Mason has it, and could make the team, why not show case Betts. with the possibility of trading him? im not sure what the market would be. but he has shown he can carry the load. and has a really manageable salary

Thats not a bad idea. I'd like to see Mason against tougher defenses first, but I like that idea. Seems we're getting a little full on RBs.

Good post., especially the bolded part. Portis is a gamer. He has two speed settngs: stop and go. Ask him to play and he'll moan and groan but he'll play.

Re: Portis to play Saturday - he doesn't seem too happy about it
I kinda see where he's coming from with the injuries we've had in the past. If I recall correctly he's gearing up for a big season because he going to run "with that chip on his shoulder again".
On the other hand, you are not special. If we are going to risk our starting QB to get some snaps, get your butt out there and run some people over.

You're a pro. Suck it up and play. I love watching Portis. I've been a fan of his since he was at the U. I understand about not wanting to get injured in preseason, but I have to agree with Hagams. If Campbell is going to get some reps and possibly get hit, you need to do the same.
