As someone from Gettysburg, I can tell you that the people who heard the original (and there weren't many, a lot less than two million or whatever) didn't immediately turn to each other and proclaim, "we've just witnessed the greatest speech in American History!" I guess my point being we need some time for perspective. I thought Obama's speech was solid, appropriately cognizant of the difficulty the country is facing, with just enough uplift to leave us not feeling hopeless. I think if Obama goes onto be a great president, we'll go back and cherry pick lines from yesterday's speech and act like it was great and timeless all along. If he is mediocre, well, then his speech will fade into the ether like those of most of the presidents who came before him. |

In any case, the party for O has changed course and it all counts from here. Many promises made. We'll see how the fulfillment goes. I for one am not an O'Bama advocate, but like Schneed and many more wish him success as I am an American first, and it will benefit me as well if he is successful

Re: Official Inauguration Day Thread
I thought it was a pretty good speech overall. Now it's time to get to work.

That was cool! Two million people really don't take up much room considering.

Re: Official Inauguration Day Thread
I hear he froze the pay of his staff and banned them from lobbying for the next five years. If he keeps that up I might start to like the blessed one. I don't think anyone can live up to the hype that everyone is entrusting him with. It's sad to see that they place so much trust in a politician and less so on themselves. I'll give him a shot though.

Re: Official Inauguration Day Thread
They being the people who were interviewed at the inaguration and said they could hear "God Speaking Through The Blessed One".
IE: The people that Jay Leno interviews on the street and think that Spain is in Asia and JFK won the Second World War against England. You know who they are. They're the educated people who know better than you and I. I'm just a bumpkin from hick-town. What would I know about latte's and climate change? |

We'll see how Obama handles this. I do like, while he was campaigning, when he said that he was going to pull his troops out of Iraq and put them back into Afghanistan. That is a start! Hopefully, he'll follow through, come up with a plan, and catch that bastard!

Re: Official Inauguration Day Thread
I watched the speech and paid more attention to his demeanor and tone than I did to the words. His body language, facial expressions and tone of voice were very serious and sobering, speaking to the immense amount of work ahead of us. But at the same time he stood up with his shoulders back and chest out, you could tell he feels confident.
I voted for McCain and preferred his ideas to Obama's in many instances, but I'm of the mind that once the decision is made, it's time to fall in line. I'm behind him and rooting for him as I'm sure all of you are too, but I'm also willing to give his policies a chance. While I disagreed with a lot of it, the time for debating is passed, it's time for him to execute and I'm watching hopefully to see that it turns out well. I was impressed with him and proud to have him as my president.
