He can probably play lower, and will have to in order to dig out elite nose tackles on the next level, but I think he has the athleticism to improve on his technique. My question, however, would be to what extent the Redskins acknowledge their need at Center? I am perfectly willing to admit that Rabach is a serious liability, but do they recognize that fact? That would be the central question in this scenario.

I know they acknowledge their need at OLB and for a pass rusher. Aaron Maybin would fit both of those criteria and would be a good system player in Blache's scheme. I have also read your case against Maybin and find that equally compelling (one year player, no chance to regress to mean, really a system fit and probably not fit with whoever succeeds Blache). My feeling, though, would be that in the scenario you offer the Redskins would attempt to fill the need that they see as most urgent and take Maybin over Mack. I'd rather have Mack in the first and Sidbury in the third, but I think the choice here would be Maybin.

Yeah, I agree with you about Mack. He is athletic and works hard, but does he have the strength and technique to go against great nfl NTs and DTs week in and week out. The thing I find interesting about Mack in highlights is that he seems to be off his feet in a majority of the plays - too much leaning, overcompensating for a lack of strength?

I don't think he has a problem with strength. He is aggressive and always moving forward. I've seen him in pass blocking where the DT didn't even budge him. Not even a step. He is a huge center and may need to work a little on his footwork, but strength is not a problem. He's a HOG.

Yeah, that's what laurinatis seems to lack the most - "IT". Who knows, he may improve once he gets to the nfl, but you can say this much for everyone given the chance.

Joe Bugel quoted in a Redskins.com article dated 2/12/09:

Of veteran center Casey Rabach: “He is one of the top players I have ever coached at his position. His preparation is impeccable. He knows the offense inside and out. He knows the defenses we’re playing inside and out. He’s a strong cog on our football team. He’s really a very quiet, unassuming leader.”

To answer your question: It seems they don't recognize it at all.

go for Unger or Mack at 13th. See if we can trade other picks for a high 2nd rounder to get Britton or Loadholt to backup aging O-line.

Buges has lobbied for linemen before to no avail. He does'nt get to buy the groceries. I love Buges but if it were up to him, Jansen would probably be our starting RT for the next 3 years.

I also wonder about the assumption that the Redskins could just take Maulauga or Laurinatis and plug them in at SLB. They are both ILB's and I don't know about the assumption that they can just play anywhere. I say this having not watched much of either and more of Maulauga than Laurinatis, but neither offers much of a pass rush (which has been and will continue to be a liability in Blache's scheme). With all the needs the Redskins have at multiple positions taking a MLB seems like a luxery they can't afford at the moment. They have Fletcher and Blades has not done anything to suggest he cannot serve as a competent replacement at MLB when the time comes.

Re: I give you the first 12 picks, Give me your Redskins draft pick!

I like the idea of getting Mack if we could trade down & pick up a 2nd too. Mack should be around in the 20-32 range.

After thinking about the impact of a center, I think we might be undervaluing it. The center calls a lot of signals to his linemates & has to be prepared. Also, w/so many teams playing the 3-4 well, dominant nose tackles are going to be a position that a lot of coaches covet. We'll see more DTs being developed for that.

I don't think Buges et al believe Rabach's play isn't a concern, it just likely isn't their biggest concern. J. Ratliff beat him badly that one game, but aside from that I think he's played at least ok.

Bottom line to me, center is not the highest priority but if Mack is the BPA after we trade down, I think it's a smart pick.

Re: I give you the first 12 picks, Give me your Redskins draft pick!

Were going to trade down w/ Min (22) and select Alex Mack, and pick up a 2nd and draft Jason Williams OLB W. Illinois. But if I had to pick at 13, I'd choose Tyson Jackson DE LSU. Some mocks have him going at 10 to SF, but I think he'll fall to us. He can play the run as well as rush the passer.

According to my draft board I would take Alex Mack. Michael Johnson and Moreno would also get consideration.

The Skins coaches know I'm sure. They study the tape, Zorn even comes up with plays so that Rabach can go pick on someone his own size.

They might overestimate their own abilities to compensate for him, but if we can trade down and Mack is still the BLA, we'll almost certainly pull the trigger.

This thread is supposed to be a fun little doomsday scenario, where no good value players are available. In reality though, I'm actually pretty sure that Oher will be the next Redskin (unless we pass on him). Kiper doesn't think he's going until the late 20's, and I don't think anyone will pull the trigger on him after Cincinnati because everyone else has other needs that would take precident unless they really like Oher.

I do think there's a solid chance that the big four will be gone, but it all depends on the top of the draft.

Wait, you're pretty sure Oher will be the next Redskin, but you also think there is a solid chance the big four will be gone?

Um...yeah. Something like that.

I think there will be a lot of demand for the big four, and it's a larger chance than most people realize that they all go in the top ten. With that said, it's probable (but certainly not a sure thing) that at least one slips through the cracks and I believe it will be Oher.

I'm not making much sense today.
