Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

IF this is true, then I love this move! For those who are saying they hope it isn't true, this does NOT mean Joe Gibbs would be choosing player personnel. True, he may have a hand with it, but Gibbs is responsible for hiring a legitimate GM and a good coach, then that GM will handle most of the player personnel. This is probably the ONLY thing sort of Daniel Snyder selling the team that could turn this team around. Honestly, do you think Daniel Snyder is going to pick the perfect GM for us? I would rather trust Joe Gibbs. Yes, Gibbs II wasn't as successful as what we all had hoped for, but compared to how things were before he came and afterwards, it was a huge success! So, I'm all for this! PLESAE BE TRUE!!!!

Gibbs isn't a good talent evaluator anymore, this game has passed him, bring in chris polian, Bill's son and build a team all through the draft, and not free agency and trading draft picks. If Gibbs comes in he should be the team chaplian. He is a better talent evaluator than Vinny though

We reported earlier this month that owner Daniel Snyder still consults with Gibbs, and that the two men had dinner in Charlotte the night before the Redskins' loss to the Panthers.
This would be a good move for Snyder. Although a little wary, if Snyder has been consulting with Gibbs already, where has that taken us thus far?

You're missing the point. Joe Gibbs would not have a direct hand in choosing the players. He would choose the GM and the head coach. Gibbs is still very good at building sports franchises. He may not be head coach material anymore, but that does not mean he does not have the eye for talent in the front office and for head coaches.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

Another reason I don't want Gibbs here is because of the wall to wall media coverage he would get and the expectations along wtih it. I don't think a GM could possibly operate in that environment.

The big question would always be, who's in charge? With every win and every lost, who's in charge? People would always attempt to connect the dots leading back to Gibbs. Oh, Gibbs and Danny would hold a big presser introducing the new GM and the new head coach declaring this a new day a Redskins Park. They would atone for there sins publicly, assuring the fans that he's not the decision maker and he's just in the background.

I don't see anything good coming out of this, except for more filled seats.

I doubt Snyder and VC has been consulting with Gibbs all this time. Gibbs has been mostly centered around his racing team. They just happened to meet for dinner in Charlotte, NC when the 'skins were in town against the Panthers.

So what would be the difference if we hired Bill Parcells to do the same thing?

I disagree. I think Gibbs is a so-so talent evaluator. And I have no evidence of him building any football franchises? During his first stint or his second stint. Sure, the company line would be Gibbs has no say in who's coming here and who's going. Do we really believe that?

And as far as him better than Vinny, that's not saying much. We don't need someone a little bit better than Vinny. We need a bonafide, kickass, successful GM. Anything short of that, ain't cutting it.

Because Parcells has done it as a coach and he's doing it right now as GM in Miami. I don't hear jack about Parcells in Miami, but his influence and strategy is evident. He has depth at the key positions and he has a head coach that is competent at the NFL level.

If Gibbs came here, it would be all sizzle and no steak. Great for ratings, but I fear little production.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

What Gibbs is good at (at least I've seen it with his NASCAR team) is finding the right managers and delegating responsibility. I think he could play a wise role in finding the right General Manager, for example, to lead the team.

If anything though, Gibbs could go to bat for Snyder and tell Jimmy Raye (just to throw a name out there), "Hey listen, I'll vouch for him. This is a guy you can work for. He's got the Joe Gibbs Seal of Approval"

This dinner by the way in Charlotte, completely overblown. As it was told to me, it was a dinner function with many people there.

Parcells is not the GM in Miami. He's the VP of Football Operations. Jeff Ireland is the GM... hired by Parcells.

I think a lot of people aren't clear on what Parcells role is there. He's not the GM and he's not as hands on as people think.

Gibbs would play the same role here. Hire a GM, help hire a coach. It's not a very hands on, down and dirty position. It's just an overseeing of the football ops more than anything.

Well, we all do want an elite playoff team year in and year out. And true, in Gibbs I, Bobby Beathard was mostly responsible for finding the right players, as he should have been considering he was the GM. However, I am also applying what Gibbs has done in NASCAR to build championship racing teams. I am speaking on the premise of Gibbs being responsible for finding that GM, which I believe he has the smarts to find that perfect guy for that position, and I also believe someone like Joe Gibbs could find the right coach for us. After all, Joe Gibbs does know a thing or two about coaching in the NFL. And, Joe Gibbs knows a thing or two about being a Super Bowl Champion coach in the NFL. What does Vinny know about picking Head coaches? Apparently, not a lot! It has already been proven that Snyder and Vinny suck as choosing GMs and coaches, why not give someone who has been successful in the NFL a chance to make those choices? It is unfair to say Gibbs doesn't know anything about choosing head coaches or GMs. He hasn't been given the opportunity to do so yet. Let's not tunnel vision solely on player choice during his second stint. I think he also made some right choices during his time here as well.

Gibbs hasn't done it as a coach? Hhhmmmm.....gee...who was coaching those Super Bowl teams of the 80's and early 90's?

I think you're getting very confused as to what a President of Football Operations does and what a GM does. The President helps to hire the GM and the Coach. The GM deals mostly with bringing in the players.
