He's been a Pro Bowl performer pretty much since he came in the league and he's widely regarded as one of the top guys at his position. That's not called "Cooley colored glasses", that's called reality. Is he perfect? Of course not. But who is?

You on the other hand seem to have it out for him, for some odd reason I can't seem to figure out nor does it make much sense. But have fun with that.

Oct 29 RB Clinton Portis criticized the front office's lack of foresight in preparing for the season-ending injuries to aging, oft-injured linemen Chris Samuels and Randy Thomas. "We got to ... get some depth," Portis said. "We went into the season and we didn't address that issue and it came back to haunt us." Thomas, who tore his right triceps in Week 2, and Samuels, who suffered a likely career-ending neck injury in Week 5, each had two offseason surgeries and are 33 and 32, respectively. But executive vice president Vinny Cerrato gambled that they would make it through 2009 unscathed or that journeyman Jeremey Bridges and Mike Williams, out of football the past two years, would be ready to step in if the starters went down. Bridges was so shaky last summer that he was cut. Williams has been ineffective as a starter the past three games. Will Montgomery, who had made six career starts before Week 5 and was on the street last November, has taken Thomas' place while Williams has been at right tackle since Stephon Heyer shifted from that spot to replace Samuels. "The only mainstays from our opening day roster that's on that line are (center) Casey Rabach and (left guard) Derrick Dockery," Portis lamented. "Everyone else has been shuffled, moved, changed or injured. So we're playing with two guys that was originally the starters. (Just-signed tackle) Levi Jones (played a snap). We signed him five days ago. That's just the position we're in." The criticism resonates more from Portis than it would from another player since he is so close to owner Dan Snyder that he has jokingly been referred to as the team's assistant general manager.

Looks like he's a valuable part of the team, he's one of the only players actually saying exactly what we are and could actually get some changes made, mainly sending Cerrato packing.

He had 1,705 AP yards and 9 TDs last season, even with the destruction of the line in front of him...he still has it.

Just as Campbell or any QB couldn't succeed behind the lack of a line this season, neither can a RB, even one as good as Portis. Also keep in mind that this season until Lewis took over playcalling, he has being send to run a stretch play into 5 defenders who meet him in the backfield.

I really think you are pulling things out of nowhere regarding Cooley. I can probably name you five to ten other players in the team that have been more responsible for bad plays on the field this season...

I mean you can have your criticism of Cooley (earlier in the season I criticized his ball security after he had a fumble go out of bounds) but I think your stretching the truth trying to make him out to be a team problem.

My point is this. He drops passes, fumbles (more than Moss), and is not a very good blocker. I like Cooley, but I am sickeneed by people crticising Portis, Moss, and everybody else and not criticzing Cooley. He has cost us first downs and Cooley has turned the ball over. Stop with the blow up the roster mess, we need a young runnning back and rebuild the O-line. Keep Portis and the new young stub, that's how most teams do it. People are cherry picking performances.

Now is the best time to move Portis. As 12th Man said earlier in this thread, and Pocket$ has said in other threads...better to move someone a year too early than a year too late

When Cooley screws up, people call him on it. People have always called him on the fumbling.

And as Ruhskins says above, there are plenty of other guys more responsible for this mess.

Cooley has been one of the lone bright spots.

I think you are doing the same.

Furthermore, I don't understand the concept of defending some players (Portis, Moss) by criticizing another (Cooley). And why are you trying to make something out of nothing by making Cooley out to be the problem.

Cooley is a team guy, doesn't complain, produces in an offense w/out a good QB, good oline, and w/out a good coach. He's a top 7 or 8 TE in the league consistently. Since 2005, i think he's top 5 in catches. He's an adequate blocker, not below average.

So that's not cherry picking. That's facts. CP has produced no doubt, but i think his act has gotten a little old.

I've got no problem with some constructive criticism, but taking an innocent mistake and spinning it into character issues is a bit extreme.

You have to look at this from the perspective of the new coach coming in here. He's going to look at this team and perform triage, deciding what parts need scrapping and what we can work with for another year. Cooley and Moss fall in the later. Campbell and Portis are on the fence. The O-line, defensive backfield and receiving corps need the most attention. But some of these guys may be trade fodder for free agents or draft picks. It's not going to happen all at once. Personally I think Cooley stays.

You can not change the culture of that team with Portis still around. He is to close to ownership...he does and says what he wants...he practices when he wants...he's a terrible example for the other players. To put it simple...he is a team cancer.

Do you really believe Portis has any value in trade? He is one of the highest paid RB's in the league and it's pretty much a known fact that he's lost a step. I can't even see them getting a 7th round pick for him simply because no other team would pay that contract.

I know everyone is down on CP, and I do think it's getting close to where we should look to move on from him, with a capable OL I think he can still be a very effective RB.
