I would take a chance on Mallet as well. From what I have seen this kid can play.
It amazes me that in the process of evaluating players, the personal negative stuff has to be made so public. Really only the teams, owners, coaches and front office people are the only ones that need to know this stuff. It should not be made into an hour long show and discussed by some unqualified moron like Jaime Dukes on national tv.
These are the personal lives of young adults and not fictional tv, it should be kept more private. This is not like Brett Farve or Ben Roethlisburger situation where they victimized somebody. These are really young adults that smoked some weed and acted the fool in college like most of us did at that age.

As an overall player he's not. So if Newton and Mallet are both there you'd take Mallet....... If you had to choose. I personally don't want nothing to do with both of them.

I don't want Newton, but only because he's black. If he was white then all of his character problems would be okay

Still if we're going to use race as a determining factor for who to select then we should just settle on Kaepernick. Half Black, half white. As most geneticist know, genetic diversity produces the strongest offspring.

I agree. If I were forced to choose between the two, I'd take Mallett. His arm likely will lend him a longer career than Newton. But I don't think that either one is right for us.

In your opinion....
Nobody will know for sure al least for another couple of years. That is the beauty of the NFL and the draft.
Charlie Casserly was making an astute point the other day about player evaluation. In talking about how two of the three best qb's in the NFL today (Brady, Brees and Peyton Manning), two were not the first Qb taken in their draft and all the talent evaluation was wrong on Brees and Brady. They were rated too low.
So out the three best Qb's in the NFL today, only one of the three draft evaluation was correct. That is 33.333% and very low.

Mallet has grown on me, but I dont see him as the right fit here. He'd be great in Minnesota with Musgrave

Re: Was Jamie Dukes out of line on Ryan Mallett?

Not a big Duke's fan b/c, as someone else said, he's just another talking head who, IMO, doesn't bring anything to the table. As to the particular comment, whatever, as others have said, poor word choice. Happens to all of us every now and then.

Also, not sure if anyone realizes this, Dukes was actually trying to compliment Mallet and say that, essentially, his personality is somewhat off-putting b/c he isn't a corporate whitewashed Disney QB. Dukes then implied, through very inept phrasing, that Mallet's personality meshed well with his teammates and would bring something different to the table.

Of course, Cosell was trying to compliment V. Seay when Cosell called him "that little monkey".

Re: Was Jamie Dukes out of line on Ryan Mallett?

Does anyone mad about this comment watch the NFL Network, Dukes loves this guy and thinks he may be the best player available? All he was saying was that because he speaks using African American style slang that scouts may be under valuing him. Give the man a break.

This is a very old topic but since it's still open, I have a question about Howard Cosell comment #2 below. It was Alvin Garrett (not Virgil) of the Smurfs that Cosell made ONE of his FOUR comments about.

Taken in context, Howard Cosell didn't actually call Garrett anything. One of the politically (in)correct words he used at least four times that I know of is listed below along with the context of how he used it.

FOR THE RECORD: It has already been proven that these comments had nothing to do with racism. Cosell was a strong civil-rights supporter of all athletes including Curt Flood, Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, Arthur Ashe, Muhammed Ali, and John Carlos/Tommy Smith (1968 Olympics) among others.

FACT: There are at lease FOUR separate "little monkey" comments made by Cosell, (not just one or two).

#1. "You know that little monkey... again, the theorem was that he was too small for pro football." - August 29, 1972 K.C. Chiefs vs. N.Y. Giants preseason HOF game (re: Mike Adamle)

#2. "Look at that little monkey run!" (Unidentified player, mid 70's game, punt or kickoff return?) Does anyone remember who this one was about???

#3. "Joe Gibbs wanted to get that kid, and that little monkey gets loose doesn't he?" - September 5, 1983 Dallas at Washington (re: Alvin Garrett)

youtube.com/watch?v=PVScwog05Xw

#4. "That little monkey can really pick it." 1982, Cosell called white Atlanta Braves second baseman a "little monkey" while praising his fielding skills. (re: Glenn Hubbard)

I have already eliminated Alvin Garrett (Washington Redskins), Mike Adamle (K.C. Chiefs), and Joe Washington (Baltimore Colts and Washington Redskins) with my review of those games and players above. Note: It was not the game where Joe Washington ran a last minute 91 yd kickoff return for a touchdown to win the game 34-27 during the September 18, 1978 Monday night game between the Baltimore Colts at New England Patriots.

Anyone remember if comment #2 was even about a Redskin player?

Re: Was Jamie Dukes out of line on Ryan Mallett?

The government and people in general go to extremes one way or another to right wrongs. There comes a time when enough is enough. Things have reached that point in my opinion. There should be no double standards for anyones benefit. Let's move on. But remember to never let it happen again.....toward ANY race.
