I think both are fine coaches in their own right but yeah, given the choice I would take Shanahan because of his offenses.

But if you compare them, Cowher actually comes out ahead in winning percentage .623 to .598 so I think he did a little more than just get lucky here and there.

Even if did regain his beast form it is still likely that he wouldn't fit in here.
1. Shawne is a OLB
2. Shift Rak to a rotation with Jarmon at RE
3. Merriman has played a 3-4 if we shift to a hybrid defense

honestly in a uncapped year the washington job is the most desirable job of them all because you have a owner who will bring in whoever you want uncapped resources.

why don't you wikipedia shanahan and cowher's coaching records? cowher's steelers were in the playoffs 75% of the time. they won the division 50% of the time. his win/loss record is superior to shanahans. he has more recent success than shanahan. his team played in a division very similar to our own. cowher's record is vastly surprior to shanahan's in every respect i can think of.

if anyone was a blind squirrel, it was shanahan - he only won 1 playoff game since elway retired. whereas his team got worse over the years, cowher's got better. shanahan's a good coach, and a great upgrade over zorn, but cowher is the superior coach. its not even debatable.

Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal

Yep, "The Rat" has arrived at Dulles.

Shanahan lands at Dulles

Updated at 3:48 p.m.

The unveiling of Mike Shanahan as the Redskins' new head coach could be imminent. On the same day that Jim Zorn was relieved of his head coaching duties, Shanahan arrived in Washington, where he's expected to conclude negotiations with the Redskins to fill their coaching vacancy.

Owner Daniel Snyder's plane departed Washington earlier this morning, just a couple of hours after General Manager Bruce Allen fired Zorn, and returned to Dulles International around 3 o'clock this afternoon with Shanahan -- long coveted by Snyder -- in tow.

Snyder's jet was spotted on the runway by Post reporter Zach Berman before quickly disappearing into a private hangar. NBC4's Dan Hellie found Shanahan at the airport, but the former Denver coach declined to comment. Hellie said he asked Shanahan if he'd like to talk. "No, not right now," Shanahan responded to Hellie.

Shanahan went from plane to car in short order and was whisked away to an unknown destination.

Allen said at today's news conference that he had no timetable for replacing Zorn, but promised that the search would be an aggressive one.

Citing an unnamed source, the Associated Press also reported that Allen and Shanahan spoke on the phone early this morning. Many in the organization and across the league have said for weeks that the hiring of Shanahan was inevitable. The Redskins' lost their
season finale, 23-30 Sunday, fired Zorn shortly after returning to Ashburn, making Shanahan's hiring imminent.

League sources say Shanahan has been quietly assembling a coaching staff for weeks and a major overhaul is expected.

Shanahan was fired as Denver head coach following the 2008 season and spent much of 2009 hearing his name attached to several head coaching jobs. But his options appeared to dry up quickly, according to sources. Though he interviewed for a position with the Buffalo Bills, and privately expressed interest in potentially joining the Dallas
Cowboys and Chicago Bears, those organizations were not interested in him, according to sources. If Shanahan is hired, as expected, he'd become the team's seventh head coach under Snyder -- and likely the league's highest-paid.

Whatever we could hire anyone and you would find something to bitch about.

I think you make a great Cowboys fan.

If we were hiring Cowher right now you be saying Shanny was the better guy.

Go yell fire in a diffrent theater we are enjoying the movie here.

Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal

There are a lot of people who wonder how good Cowher would have been without his staff. You don't get those same questions quite so often with Shanahan. Of course, I would think that wherever Cowher goes he would have a top notch staff. Still, some food for thought I suppose.

I'm probably more excited about Kyle Shanahan quite honestly. I think he's the real deal

If this is a "contract meeting," then i agree. but i had just assumed it was for an "interview."

He should give us a heckuva passing offense. And if everything goes well (that's "if"), he could take over when dad retires, giving us some coaching stability for a long time.

nope. I had no complaints about shanahan until I knew cowher was an option. of course, as someone mentioned, its possible cowher was just using the skins - presumably to leverage a better deal elsewhere.

Nope. I've been on the record here for quite a while as indicating cowher was my #1 choice. I just didnt think he was "available" to us.

I'm Just saying we'd be fools to chose shanahan over cowher, all other things being equal. Cowher's the superior coach. i'm not unhappy about shanahan inofitself.

I'm not "yelling fire." I'm a homeless man who has lived on the street for the past 12 years or so who's being given either a $500,000 dollar house that could appreciate in value to $700,000 over the next 5 years or a $600,000 house that could appreciate in value to $800,000 in that same time period. i'm greatful to finally have a place to live and i'll take what i can get - but i'd rather have the better house. thats all.

Did Shanahan bring his flamethrower to Redskins Park?

i've read mixed things about kyle on texans boards. some feel like you do. others say he's overrated and not that great of a coordinator himself. in either case, he'll only get better working under his father, so thats good. kyle obviously WANTS to work with his dad, so that increases the likelyhood that we'd have a good coordinator who WOULDN'T leave us to take a HC gig elsewhere. The value of this can't be overstated - look how bad the Giants D was this year without spags. we wouldn't have that problem here.

on the flip side, are there potential dangers to having a son work for his father? would other coaches on staff become disgruntled over real/percieved "special treatment" that kyle would receive? if there are problems ever develop in the family, would they affect the product on the field (or visa versa)? if Kyle ends up becoming a liability, how could shanahan fire his own son?

1. Merriman is not a 4-3 OLB he would be a DE in the 4-3 scheme.

2. If we keep the 4-3 then Rak can play DE or LB and Jarmon can play DE, If we change to a 3-4 then Rak is not a RE he becomes a OLB all over again. Jarmon serves no purpose in a 3-4.
