It's obvious that SF has been successful with Kaepernick at QB, and whether those wins come because of him or in spite of him, it's working. Plus, he' s only going to get better.

Like others have mentioned, if Kaep gets this much, what's RG3 going to ask for? I hate to think about that...
People use the word "franchise QB" too loosely. He's not a franchise QB at this point and time. Period. The 49ers were just as good with Alex Smith behind the helm which shows you it wasn't the QB responsible for their winning.

The only franchise QBs in this league currently are: Rodgers, Manning, Brady, Brees, Rivers, Romo, Ryan, Roethlisberger........and maybe Stafford.

Others have the potential to be but simply aren't there quite yet.

I'm just saying in order to win a super bowl you do not need a QB that takes up almost 20 million of your cap space.

Kaep is a good QB, but his contract probably means they won't be able to keep a lot of pieces that helped him be successful in place.

I just think teams are panicking and think they have to pay QB's a lot more than what they are worth otherwise they suck. San Fran made it to the NFC championship game without Kaep one year. They have a great team, Kaep is a good player but he still is just a piece on one of the most talented teams in football. He isn't a 126 million dollar piece.

Well, that superbowl came down to the wire. So I am not sure you can make the argument Flacco deserves the money and Kaep doesnt.

As for the idea that you dont need a big time qb to win a superbowl - recent history says you do. I agree to an extent that it is a team sport - you need weapons around your qb, and a defense on the other side, but the qbis a critical critical position and if you believe in Kaep, than you lock him up for the duration. I have seen enough out of him that I think he is worth it. Of course only time will tell.
If you want to make the argument that teams should spread their money around and not tie it all up in qb's that is fair, but its also just the way of the world.

I know the QB position is important, but the public in general is a bit tend to overhype certain QBs. Russell Wilson and Kaep are a good example. Both are very good QBs, tons of potential, but both QBs for the most part were not asked to outright win games by themselves the way P. Manning, Brady, and Brees do. Hell, even Flacco carried his team during the playoffs the year they won the SB, even though he didn't play that great during the season.

You're right, but Kaepernick's close enough and young enough to get paid like a franchiser. Like I said before, he was overpaid, but at the same time, he had all the leverage and SF couldn't really take the chance on letting him walk.

I think it does matter. Kap has been the QB on a team that's made deep playoff runs the last three years. On top of that he's had some HUGE games during those playoff runs. He's still developing, he's had some bad games, but his ceiling is simply too high not to pay him. SF had no choice.

As far as Cultler is concerned, he's still had enough of a resume to get that type of money. Plus Chicago has a huge investment in him.

If Griffin has a strong year in 14, you have to pay him a similar deal that Kap got. If he plays like he did in 13, you don't extend him and let him play out his deal in 15.

That's the way business is done now with QB's. Sometimes you have to overpay.

with tv deals and the enormous pay day you get for making the playoffs, advancing in the playoffs, making the superbowl, and winning the superbowl (how big of a payday you get goes up depending on how far you go...) overpaying here and there is easily made up for if you wind up being right.

for example - we overpaid to acquire griffin, and we're going to overpay to keep him. If we wind up with multiple NFC championship appearances and at least one SB, it's going to wind up being worth the cost.

given how much money the NFL is currently making, they're gambling with free money anyways. NFL ownership practically comes with a license to print money these days. the only real cost is the salary cap consequences...

No way I would want this clown anywhere near our team.

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III OK with less attention -- 'It's about we' - ESPN

The article itself was pretty basic off-season fodder BUT I thought the following quote from Gruden was interesting:

Quote:
"He [Griffin] doesn't like negative publicity," Gruden said. "He wants everything to be right. He wants everybody to love Robert and that's not always going to be the case at the quarterback position."
I have never bought into the "RGIII is a diva" concept - just too much evidence that he is a hard worker and is very well liked/respected by his teammates. However, I do think the guy wants to be liked. Not in a "look at me" or "me first" way, but in a "Let's all be pals" kind of way. Unfortunately, being an NFL QB is similar to supervising others - you can't always be their buddy.

I can also see how this would clash with a head coach like Shanahan who really didn't appear to give a flying f*** if anyone liked him as long as they respected him.

You make a good point about the RGIII/Shanahan relationship. A good manager knows not to try to treat all people in the same manner. Fairly yes but not not in the same manner. People have different personalities, they value different things, they respond best to different approaches, and some need more attention than others. Shanahan must have forgotten that. If Shanahan was going to maintain a good relationship with any player, his relationship with RGIII should have been the one he valued most.

Stafford, no, absolutely not. I agree with what else you are saying but not on Stafford

As much as Romo can go to hell, he is better than Stafford.
