But aside from that, Jenkins and Carriker will both get a lot of playing time. If Jenkins doesn't start I don't think that means his future is doomed to mediocrity.
Yeah and I argue that's exactly what it means.

My priorities for Carriker are as follows.

Quote:
1. Stand up guys at the point of attack and if possible try to draw double teams. Bottom line, keep guys off our linebackers.

2. Shed blocks and make plays at the line of scrimage or in the backfield on runs

3. Bull Rush guys on passing downs and make the pocket slightly more uncomfortable.

4. Break away from blockers and get to the QB.
Basically his main job is to keep guys off our linebackers and hold up at the point of attack. If he goes all Haynesworth that leaves Fletcher and *ehhem* Tatpu vulnerable and anyone thats played football knows it's tough to be engaging a blocker head on one second and then getting off him into a position to properly wrap up a ball carrier. Most D-Lineman do it with shear size not technique. Thats what linebackers are for (proper tackling technique) and also why it's important to keep them untouched.

So what's the argument? That a draft pick should start from day one? That a draft pick should start from day one over a perceived bust?

I thought Carriker looked pretty good at the end of last year, like a light came on. Although he'll never be Richard Seymour, I have high hopes for him this year.

Seems Rocky was probably bought due to knowledge of the system and to push Riley, but I think Riley is still the starter when it's all said and done. Has said he needs more time playing, and he'll get his time to play, even if he's rotating in and out with Rocky.

I think we're going to see a lot of these DEs being rotated by Haslett.

With a touch of mediocre thrown in?

I want young players for this team to start coming in from day one saying "get off the field dude you're in my way to greatness."

Exactly. As someone else pointed out in an analysis of our defense this past year, and which I've seen on many of the games I've rewatched since then, teams almost always tried to run away from Carriker and had less success running towards him.

I sense sarcasm but just in case your serious you'd basically be hoping for the team to replace Adam "get off my linebackers" Carriker for Albert "stats stats stats" Haynesworth. The reason Albert was so bad in the 3-4 packages came from the fact that he left the linebackers wide open, which would have been fine if he was making plays in the backfield but the fact of the matter is he wasn't. Only in those 4 man nickle packages was he usseful.

Re: 2011 Redskins Free Agents Rumors and Reports-Part 3

3-4 DEs will rarely, if ever, EVER produce a pretty stat sheet because their job is to occupy and push the OL into a desired position. His job is to occupy and force the OL to address blocking him so that they DON'T block the LBs. If he (or the NT) decides to go for personal glory at the expense of his assignment, the entire D will risk giving up a big play.

The one thing a 3-4 CANNOT do is allow the opposing OL to move them. Hence, plugging in weak ass players like Golston into the 3-4 DE role often results in disaster.

I am. Initially I was conflicted about our FA strategy but now I like what I think the Shanaplan is.. Build a competitive roster of young, hard working players.. Next year (assuming the Rexy & Bexy show doesn't bear fruit) bring a QB in to round it out and away we go.. I think the Giants are headed downwards and the Cowboys are as usual over hyped. We're another solid offseason from being a playoff team but the Hightower, Cofield, Gaffney, Kerrigan, Jenkins and Hankerson moves should pay nice dividends in '11.

You know I always liked Carriker, but watching him snap in and snap out and only seeing him get pushed back on one snap makes me love him even more. I don't think enough people appreciate how strong he is.

That isn't his game. I mean the guys 311 pounds. He's great at what he's suppose to do which is basically stonewall people at the line of scrimmage and help collapse the pocket. Keep in mind, just because he's a DE doesn't mean he's going to move like Dwight Freeny. In essence he's a DT that plays a little wide.

I think Adam is going to have a solid year ... I can't say enough how much I love the depth on this team ... Bruce Allen & Shanny is so refreshing ... Jenkins was a bad ass pick and I do think he will be solid but to say he has to beat out a mediocre guy by week 1? What are you smokin'...split time fresh legs, rocky Being able to swing around I like , always had a soft spot for Rocky... I can't wait for football
