Re: Mega-Merge: 2010 Free Agency Rumors and Reports Thread
At this point I just want Foote, Clark and any of these weak guards and tackles.
I also heard Atogwe from the rams might be available? That would be absolutely amazing if we could get our hands on him. |

Re: Mega-Merge: 2010 Free Agency Rumors and Reports Thread
Ironically enough, Al Saunders' rushing attack never blocked the backside end either. But that was a different scheme. We weren't looking for the cutback as much as we were just trying to beat the backside end to the point of attack.
And it never worked. But damned if we weren't going to keep trying.

Foote is definitely a guy that I'd like us make an effort to keep him from visiting elsewhere, especially if the FO is thinking that Fletcher won't be around much longer. He definitely has some years left in him, barring injury.

Re: Mega-Merge: 2010 Free Agency Rumors and Reports Thread
Pashos's agent says no deal is in place
There were reports Saturday evening the Redskins agreed to terms with both Artis Hicks and Tony Pashos, which still could happen. But as of now, Hicks is the only new offensive lineman headed to Ashburn. "It's not true. It's not true," Pashos's agent, Rick Smith, said before I could ask a question after contacting him on his cell phone. "He left the building. He's headed to Cleveland right now." Okay. But is Pashos close to signing with the Redskins? "We're nowhere near close," Smith continued. "Like I said, he's headed to Cleveland." Re: Mega-Merge: 2010 Free Agency Rumors and Reports Thread
I think when you look at the Redskins off season on a whole, up to this point, there's no question in my mind that they've positioned themselves better than any team in the NFL. They've restructured their front office in a significant way, which has injected a sense of steadiness and focus into the atmosphere and, probably just as important, trimmed some much need fat from the roster. All of this before draft day, which hopefully will yield a starter or two.
In terms of the non-moves, well, it's easy to look at the coulda, shoulda, woulda's. Every team would love to have a Julius Peppers. But the truth is Peppers isn't going to turn the Chicago Bears into an instant playoff contender, and it's going to take him time to acclimate to a new system. That's true whether it's in Chicago or in D.C. Oh, and Andre Carter ain't too shabby himself. The 'Skins get to keep a steady Carter, who on paper, was just as productive as Julius Peppers last season for a third of the price. It's also worth noting that Andre Carter is only 8 months older than Peppers. I don't think the Redskins are the team to beat, maybe not even the best team in the NFC East. But I'm fairly certain this team has Wild Card potential. The Cards have unloaded and lost a lot of key players. I doubt if the Vikings will have another run like they did last year. No Chester Taylor, an Adrian Peterson, who struggled down the stretch last season, will also be a year older. As far the NFC East goes, we all know there's usually not much separating the top four teams in the division. It comes down to solid coaching down the stretch and catching some breaks on the injury front. I'm pretty darn exciting about 2010! Hail! |

I know that the thread has moved on a bit, but I wanted to point out some great analysis here. Two fantastic points, that I was previously unaware of. Thanks 12th Man.

Well GTtripp that is the problem with this year's fa ol pool. There just aren't any good quality guys out there. Unless we trade away draft picks for RFAs. There aren't going to be any guys in the background so to speak.

Nothing is inherently wrong with either of these signings, as players who can help us win, but something doesn't quite smell right. Improvement is going to be slow, of course, but this is hardly even moving in the right direction.

Re: Mega-Merge: 2010 Free Agency Rumors and Reports Thread
Prob not going to find a lot of underpublicized guys that are that good in UFA, after this many years they're either known well or not, unless they're sitting behind a damn good starter.
Would that line of thinking be right? I def don't follow enough other teams' lines to know. |

Thing is, our scouts are notoriously poor at evaluating the talent around the rest of the league. We've, historically, been much more successful projecting from the college level. BA can only work with the information that he's been given. With Artis Hicks, we have a guy who was absolutely killed at the LT position in some limited time this year. Batiste'd, if you will. Pashos is a RT with no versatility to play anywhere else. RT and utility lineman are both needs, but three year contracts suggest that there won't be competition. That's a pricey release.

I couldn't agree more. Maybe it was a philosophy thing more than scouting but who knows.
