This blog link suggests that Zimmer is it...obviously bad writing

Shanahan Officially In; 3 Reasons the Redskins' Are a Franchise*Again - Hogs Haven

"The incoming regime is an impressive quartet that Dan Snyder deserves props for pulling off. Bruce Allen, Mike Shanahan, Kyle Shanahan, and Mike Zimmer. I'm not renewing my season tickets just yet, but this Redskins team will be competitive again in a couple years, which is no doubt something to be optimistic about."

In any case, I don't want Gray...just because he used to be a D coordinator does not automatically make him good. The secondary took a step back this year...poor tackling...that is his job to teach, Carlos Rodgers regressed under Gray too, Landry had regressed heavily...even Smoot..none of the young guys have developed either...You guys throw our WR Coach Hixon under the bus...what is the love affair with Gray...sure he did ok in Buffalo...but after he was left to his own devices, the d got worse...especially his last year, when he was fired....and throw that continuity crap in the trash...do you really want 4-12 to continue?

Zimmer on the other hand has done such an amazing job that he may get a head coach role...if we can get him as a D coordinator it would be a score on that basis alone....my concern is this...his wife just died suddenly less than 3 months ago...he has 3 girls...If I were him, there is no way I'd take on a head coach job and essentially abandon my girls when they need me the most.
The best thing for him is to stay put in cincinnati...if he comes here great, but that doesn't mean his head will be in the game...his family has just been devestated...I just don't know if that would be good for the Skins.

I don't know much about Haslett but I do know he was head coach of the year and had good defenses...that if far superior to anything Gray has accomplished.

Ask yourself this question.
Are you sure Gray is better than Blache?
I am not.

We have to be pretty picky to change D coordinators when we were top 10 in the league...only 9 other guys did better....Zimmer is one of them...the rest are not available or are big question marks.

I'd like to throw Jim Mora's name out there now as a potential DC now that he is no long the head coach in Seattle.

I don't know where this guy gets his info. I'm sure Mike Zimmer has been focused on preparing for the Jets, not making a lateral move from Cincy to Washington. I'd love to have him, but it's pretty assumptive to speak of him like he's already wearing the B&G.

Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010

Defensive players on the team seem to be pulling for Jerry Gray to take over so I don't know how much that will factor into Shanahan's decision making

These are the same players that went 4-12? Sorry, but I'll trust what the people from the outside decide.

Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010

Gray's group was easily the worst unit on defense this year. He couldn't find a way to motivate Los, improve Hall's coverage, or keep Landry from acting like an insane person. I think it's hard to find reasons to promote him.

All that is is added speculation to the speculation that we already have. It basically said "Gray might not be good but Zimmer will be." derp..

Agreed.. they pulled for Zorn and Gibbs 2.0 too.. and I think that things were a bit too soft then.

Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010

I don't have any idea why they would be pulling for Gray after how bad the secondary was last season.

Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010

I don't think Gray should get it. The secondary has declined the last 2 yrs, and I fault Gray for not teaching them how to fuckin tackle (HALL) or catch the damn ball Rogers, Smoot). I've said for 2yrs we need a true FS because LL isn't one. Hopefully we can sign one in FA (Collins) or draft one in the 4th. Let Gray walk, he was nothing but a tool to get Shanahan. LET HIM WALK

This sounds reasonable...this guy was a D coordinator before, not to mention he interviewed for the Skins head coach position before we settled on Zorn.
I bet Snyder would have hired him if he could instead of Zorn.

He obviously preferred to stay and try to get the head job in Seattle.
I just don't know how good his d coordinator stats are.
Do you?

I know Hasletts are so-so, Zimmers are really good...expecially recently. Gray's were ok but tended to get worse over time.

Does anyone have have stats on Mora's defenses before and during his reign?
Keep in mind...I am not saying Mora is a candidate for d coordinator...just interested in info in case he is acutally good...heck...he may be the 2nd best available for all I know.

But again, he is probably no improvement over Blache...which statistically is pretty good, even though I want a new guy too.

Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010

This is a what have you done for me lately league, so I am going to assume that the best guy for the job is the guy who has put together a good d in cincy, Zimmer.

Gray hasn't done much of anything lately and his D's in Buffalo weren't Championship material. So let's get some fresh blood in here.

Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010

Zimmer would be foolish to leave Cincy right now.
If I were him, I'd use the Skins as leverage to get a great extension in Cincy.
Remember, Zimmer just lost his wife, his girls need stability...his team is in the playoffs, the Skins are crappy right now...I'd take a lot less money to stay stable in his situation.

If he was to move right now..it would be for a head coach role...but that is really bad timing for him since he is now Mom and Dad at home.

My suggestion....don't get your hopes up for Zimmer. I'd be shocked if he came here considering the circumstances.

So who does that leave....I hate to say it, but I think Haslett is probably the easiest to secure from outside...which would probably mean our defense will go backwards a bit...same deal if we gave it to Gray.
It makes me wonder if we should consider keeping (dare I say it...) Blache.
