Re: Fix the Line Thread
We moved on from Polumbus earlier in the year. No worries there.

Re: Fix the Line Thread
LeRibeus ???? Have you counted how many times he got knocked straight back onto his arse this year? He is worse than Polumbus (although I understand that is almost impossible to comprehend).
How about spending high draft picks on real quality athletes who are O-linemen rather than trying to create gold out of a bunch of fourth round dregs? |

Re: Fix the Line Thread
Idk.. Compton has been doing better. He looked better against the Eagles as well. I think it's a little early to throw him out with less than a season of real game time experience.
I think the middle of our O-Line needs more work than anything. I see more guards getting pushed to RG3 face. Chester is getting worse every year and Lav was a terrible pickup.

I wouldn't count out Long just yet. He was coming off an injury in college.

Re: Fix the Line Thread
Compton is like most of the lineman that Shanny brought in. Good in the stretch run but not so good at anything else. He struggles with power run blocking and pass blocking 1 vs 1 on a DE or 3-4 OLB. He is a better version of Polumbus. Tall but not that wide. Has good speed for the stretch run blocking. When pass blocking for a QB in the pocket, he either plays the speed rush and will get run over if he guesses wrong, or he has to set up really hard for the bull rush and loses all mobility to stop a speed rush. Hes better than Polumbus, but that doesnt mean a whole lot.

Re: Fix the Line Thread
I agree that 3 of the 5 need to be replaced. But while it is cozy to hope that guys like Compton or Long actually develop into real NFL linemen, the safer approach is to go after real high end talent. Our first pick this year should address one of the guard positions or right tackle. Then maybe sign a UFA. Chester absolutely must go !!!
As for defense, first get rid of Hazlett. Then let the new Defensive Coordinator set up a plan for how he wants to proceed. |

I like that Compton can play both OT positions and I think he's fine as a swing tackle. As for Long, it takes more than a year to come back all the way from a serious knee injury. I don't think we know what we have in him yet. But he's big, tough, and aggressive. In preseason he was able able to get to the second level and do some damage. I think he'll be better next season. He should at least be a solid reserve IMO. Moses could come on, too. We'll see. I'm not saying they'll ever be starters but they could provide solid depth. I agree completely with you that we should prioritize OL in FA and the draft. Just look what drafting three 1st Round OL has done for Tony Romo and the Dallas running game.

Re: Fix the Line Thread
I didn't like that move at the time, either. It was a bad move that hurt our OL.

If he gets beat out, he'll be a capable backup to both OT spots. And with Long...when I read about his injury, I was surprised that he was ready for Training Camp. He'll be even stronger next year, with better balance. I'm in the camp that we should target o-line first, but if we're drafting inside the top 8, I can't see us taking a Guard. My bet is that we take OT, S or D-line or trade back in the first and then take Guard. The Dallas reference gives me hope that we can turn this around pretty quickly. |
