I counter with ths:

If the Stillers wanted to bring him back, then this guy must have something in the tank.

Thaddeus Gibson was an impressive pass-rushing outside linebacker at Ohio State, compared by some to fellow Buckeye Vernon Gholston (this was a compliment, at the time). He declared for the draft a year early, which many thought was premature, but the Steelers liked him enough to make him a fourth-round pick in 2010. In October, team injuries necessitated the promotion of a defensive end from the practice squad, so, being the “low man on the totem pole” in an exceedingly deep linebacking corps, Gibson was released.

Most Steelers bloggers believe Pittsburgh hoped to retain Gibson after he cleared waivers, but San Francisco scooped him up. He played sparingly for them as a rookie, then missed a practice earlier this week for unclear reasons and was cut for the second time in his career.

Yesterday the Redskins claimed him off waivers, which is interesting for several reasons:

He’s a very young 23 with a nice pedigree, only a year removed from being a well-regarded prospect at an impact position. He could definitely make a roster.

Outside linebacker isn’t an obvious need on this team. After Rak and Righteous, we have promising youth in Rob Jackson and Markus White, plus Teams maven and utility defender Lorenzo Alexander.

The Steelers wanted him back. They submitted a waiver claim as well, but we got him because we sucked last year while they went to the Super Bowl.

Granted, I don’t know the details of his dismissal from the 49ers. They could be incriminating. But ESPN’s NFC West blogger wrote this about him nine days ago, which sounds okay:

Linebacker Thaddeus Gibson repeatedly won battles during one-on-one pass-rush drills. He beat rookie Donovan Edwards twice in a row, then beat starting right tackle Anthony Davis to the inside.

At least until we find out why San Fran cut him, I really dig this move, even if more for principle than personnel.

First of all, Pittsburgh knows how to find outside linebackers outside the first round (see: Kevin Greene, Joey Porter, James Harrison, Lamarr Woodley). If they liked what they saw in Gibson enough to give him another shot, I’m totally fine with him getting a chance in Ashburn.

Secondly, and more importantly, this acquisition is yet another definitive example of Shanny’s borderline-obsessive pursuit of depth and competition at every position—even strong ones. He doesn’t guarantee starting jobs or first-team reps or roster spots to anyone at any time. He and Bruce are forever looking to upgrade the roster from top to bottom, which has already made us much better in practice and will eventually make us better on Sundays, especially in December. Moreover, they are exhaustive in exploring every mechanism available for growth and improvement, having now reshaped a young core with savvy moves via trade, free agency, the draft, and the waiver wire.

They are always watching, and they are never complacent.

Thaddeus Gibson might be a diamond in the rough, or he might be just plain rough. Either way, the start of his Redskins career should make Redskin Nation pleased.

I like the fact that he is a) special teams ready, and b) that the Steelers wanted to claim him back. seems like he could be a good backup. Would like to know why SF let him go, though.

This is why Washingtonians transplant to Atlanta.

Granted the cost of living in Pittsburgh might even get him a bigger house, but the weather!

Oh man, I hope this is true. Ironically Carlos Rogers may have had something to do with this number.

In a word, yes.

Here are eight items that show why the Giants shouldn't be written off as second-place contenders in the NFC East.

Michael Vick wasn't anywhere near as good as his 2010 numbers suggest

One of the reasons Philadelphia won the NFC East in 2010 is that Vick had a near-MVP campaign, but the fact is he benefitted from more luck than maybe any other quarterback in the league.

He had only 19.4 percent of his potential interceptions turn into actual interceptions. That total was tied for the lowest interception luck factor rate in the league and indicates he was a huge beneficiary of fortunate bounces.

Lowest interception luck factor last season

I've heard Gibson is pretty upset that we're the team that claimed him.

Well, he liked the idea of playing in a 3-4 defense. And playing for his old LB coach Lou Spanos again...but then he found out Colin Cowherd picked us to go 2-14 this year...
