Update on Locker's stock
4:04
PM ET
Jake Locker | Interested: Redskins?, Titans?, Seahawks?, Raiders?, Patriots?, Vikings?, Jaguars?
TopEmailComments

UPDATE: Rich Campbell of The Free Lance-Star spoke to NFL Network analyst Michael Lombardi about how Jake Locker would fit in Mike Shanahan's offense with the Washington Redskins.

"When you look at what Locker's best skill set is, it's to be on the perimeter, it's to be moving in the pocket," Lombardi said. "He's not an accurate quarterback and he's not a dropback passer.

"Mike's passing game is about being on the edges and challenging, whether it's bootlegs, nakeds and things like that. He's looking for athleticism at quarterback. So when I look at Locker, I see a guy who would fit what Mike does."

- Vince Verhei

---

On the day after Jake Locker's episode of "QB Camp" with ESPN's Jon Gruden aired, it's as good a time as any to check back in on the status of his draft stock.

Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean provided an update on Monday regarding the QB's visit with the Tennessee Titans. The Titans have appeared to have quite an interest in Locker for some time; however, it's uncertain whether they'd be willing to invest the No. 8 overall pick in the prospect. By all indications, Locker will need time to adjust to the rigors of the NFL game, thus the Titans would need to find a veteran on the market to handle starting duties in the meantime.

Another QB-needy team this offseason is the Washington Redskins. ESPN NFL Draft Insider Mel Kiper, Jr. has indicated that the 'Skins would have drafted Locker with the fourth overall pick in 2010 had the QB declared for the draft, and there's a possibility that their views on him have remained unchanged, meaning that they would consider him at No. 10.

If Locker makes it past that gauntlet, another potential landing spot is No. 12 overall, to the Minnesota Vikings. Tom Pelissero of 1500 AM ESPN Radio has reported that some in the organization believe Locker's makeup is similar to that of Brett Favre. Moreover, he wrote that "there is a growing sense around the NFL they're preparing to pounce on the Washington quarterback at No. 12 overall."

Here's where the wild card comes in. ESPN's James Walker reported Tuesday that the New England Patriots will be hosting Locker for a two-day visit. As you'll recall, the Patriots hosted Tim Tebow last offseason, though ultimately it was former Pats OC Josh McDaniels that drafted Tebow.

Based on all of this information, it would appear as though Locker could go as high as the Top 10, but he also could slip back -- as many draft pundits have predicted -- later in the first round. As the silly season of misinformation continues, nothing is certain until he's been picked.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

Wow, decisions decisions, Should we take an athletic/mobile QB who's not accurate (ie; Grossman), or do we look for an accurate QB who has some mobility? I'd prefer they took the accurate QB with some mobility. I'm tired of the strong armed non accurate QB's (Campbell, McNabb) and the non accurate mobile QB (Grossman). Time to just go out and get an accurate QB. Although McNabb rolled out it seemed more often then not he was simply tasked to drop back and pass.

So either get an accurate passer or pick up WR's who will go fight for the ball, or know how to adjust their route to go after the ball.

In that case a trade down makes all the sense in the world. I don't agree with a trade down if Locker is the only QB they are targeting. If there are multiple options they like then attempting to trade down makes sense.

The last mock from Kiper had us taking the QB out of Las Vegas (Koeperniachalechsentesck or something) in the 2nd round. Is this guy on really on our radar? Is he really rated as a 2nd round talent?

Just curious.

I have seen a lot of mock drafts giving us Kaepernick in round #2. It will scare the hell out of me if he ends up being the QB they draft. He is a total project. Was most likely a late round pick until he looked good at the Senior Bowl. If they say locker, gabbert and Newton need a year of grooming before they play i would hate to see how long it takes us to get this guy ready...

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

Take out Newton and Gabbert b/c the Redskins won't trade up for either of those guys (I don't think)

Then you've probably got this order of preference, from what I've gathered

1. Dalton
1A. Locker
2. Ponder
3. Kaepernick
4. Mallet

However, after Ponder I believe that actually that cluster of McElroy, Taylor (maybe Stanzi) is preferable in 4th or 5th round over Kaepernick or Mallet in the 1st 2 rounds.

So, I would say if not Dalton, Locker, or Ponder then they probably wait a few rounds to take someone like McElroy. Again, no FA is really messing their plans up

Wow Dalton. He's obviosly not in the mix at #10 so that puts them in a position of trying to trade up from #41 to the end of the 1st round which is not easy to do.

Aside from the fact that you don't think they will trade up...what are you hearing of their interest in Gabbert or Newton in general? Would they be 1 & 2 on that list?

Trade up from #41 or trade down from #10.

Good question, I don't really know the answer. I think maybe yes, but they were never really serious possibilities.

What's interesting, to me at least, is that I mentioned Quinn being at the top of their board since the beginning of January and that (from all I've heard) hasn't changed in the last 3 months. That's extremely uncommon. That's a sign of what no Free Agency does

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

In my opinion, with our limited amount of picks, our best bet would be to trade out of the 10 spot. A very "non-flashy" but highly effective first two picks for our team woulde be:

Trade out of #10 (if possible)

Select Cameron Heyward with the first pick; then grab Phil Taylor.

I know that many of us want is a QB, but let's not forget last season, we absolutely could not stop anyone! By taking Heyward and Taylor, we are getting great value and are building the foundation of our new 3-4. We all are aware of Taylor's upside, but Heyward's name is not one I've heard mentioned a lot. He has the size, decent explosiveness and the character/work ethic that would serve the 3-4 and our team well.
