Re: Jerome Mathis signed
I asked a friend about it, and he said there is two different times. Dieon had the fastest 40 but it wasn't electronically timed. Since they went electronic, he said Mathis was #1. So I guess both answers are correct...however, to me it doesn't matter...what does is that he is blazing fast.

Re: Jerome Mathis signed
very quick receiver - could provide some benefit in the West Coast offense that Zorn will run. I would stay with Cartwright on special teams though. I think he was second in avg KO return last season.

Re: Jerome Mathis signed
Reminds me of Antonio Brown with an attitude problem.
I'm taking the "wait and see" with him. If he can step up and be a team player and not get into any off the field incidents, I think he could be a great addition at a good price.

Whoops. Guess I was wrong about that last line Betts trade rumors are supposedly more than just idle chatter, but he won't be traded just to be traded. More than likey, in my opinion, this is like the Kevin Dyson signing of a few years back. Let's see if he even makes it past week 3 of preseason.

Also just for the sake of putting it out there. I think a lot of us have yet to realize including myself that for all this talk of adding another reciever the true #4 recieving option in this offense after Moss, ARE, and Cooley is probably going to be Portis. In the meantime they might be comfortable with Mix and Thrash as their backups at Reciever as I can't see a whole lot of Recievers they'd be able to take in the third round. That is unless Jerome Simpson or Jordy Nelson drops to them.

Re: Jerome Mathis signed
IF he makes the team, he should be given a chance. The organization has had plenty of "troubled" persons in the past. Didn't Gibbs have Dexter Manley? Didn't Gibbs draft the Big Bad Thug in Sean Taylor? (nobody seemed to care about these guys issues on game day) Obviously, Gibbs believes in character but also in giving people second chances. I understand Zorn carries the same mentality. I trust the organization will make the right decisions when it all comes down to it. Think about how many players hit their wives/girlfriends, amongst other things that are frowned upon, that we never hear about or that are never reported. For all we know, half our team could be losers. Doubtful, but possible. I do wonder though if we are still doing thorough background checks on everyone or if we are just overlooking the past now and hoping for a positive present and future.

Re: Jerome Mathis signed
It's funny how some people can quickly rationalize a player's off the field issues once he signs on to be a Redskin. If he had signed with a division rival I'm sure the majority of people here would be laughing and pointing at what a dumb move this was. I had hoped that the front office had learned their lesson after Lloyd. Not saying it's the same type of move, Mathis isn't going to cost us $10M in bonuses, but I just thought that after Gibbs 2.0 there would be more of a premium on character around Redskins Park. This move was disappointing to me.

Re: Jerome Mathis signed
People, before you go singing the guy's praises and giving him the benefit of the doubt because Mathis has only been involved with "one" incidient that should concern us, PLEASE do you homework. If you had read the earlier posts in this very thread you would have seen that there was also an incident in which Mathis got into a fight with one of his own teammates. And, a quick visit to NFL.com reveals the following:
"Mathis has had two recent run-ins with the law. In December, he received a misdemeanor citation after his pit bull chewed through a fence and was behaving aggressively. In February, he was charged with assaulting his pregnant common-law wife, a charge that was later dropped at the woman's request." So we've got 1. fight with teammate; 2. choking his pregnant wife (and leaving red marks according to reports); and 3. letting his mean pit bull chew through a fence (what kind of a dog even does that?......perhaps we can ask Michael Vick). Face it, this guy is a complete poop stain. I don't really care if he returns the ball 10 times for TDs this year, I don't want him on any team I cheer for. Get enough of guys like this and you become the Cowturds or Raiders.....sorry, not willing to pay that kind of price for success. This day in age in the NFL when character means more to most teams that ever before.......well, let's just say I'm just shaking my head over this one and leave it at that.

Have you never owned a dog? I've had dogs never give anyone issues that chewed through fences, jumped them, dug under them, etc... They're animals, they don't like confinement. He could've gotten the whiff of a female and been looking for some, who knows. And have you also never played sports? Teammates fight, it happens, you man up and move on. You think none of the old school guys ever fought? |

In answer to your second question: Yes, of course I've played sports. And no, I've never punched a teammate. Have I gotten into arguments with teammates? Of course, who hasn't? But a fistfight?......umm, kinda runs counter to everything that being a teammate is supposed to mean. Again, it's called being a responsible adult. Now I know what the second, third, and fourth-chance crowd around here is going to say: that's all in his past. And I hope they're right. But call me a cynic (or actually, from my perspective, a realist), I view a person's past behavior as a pretty good indicator of their character and what to expect in the future.

1- You can give this kid the benefit of the doubt and get on board and hope he keeps his nose clean as well performs well. 2- You can complain with all your might even though your opinion will not change the Skins minds. (there doesn't seem to be a point the latter, but to each his own.)
