Of course if history is any indication the best NT's usually come from the first two rounds (Kevin Williams, Casey Hampton, Vince Wilfolk, Haloti Ngata, and BJ Raji were all top half first rounders. Shaun Rogers, Jamal Williams, Terrance Cody, and Kris Jenkins were second rounders. Only Kelly Gregg, Jay Ratliff, and Aubrayo Franklin were second day picks).
Yeah the list was general to the needs of the skins, whether its free agency or draft we need to do something at that position. Very glad you brought up Kendrick Ellis, thats the guy if we had to draft someone i would take. If he ended up being taken in the 3rd round by someone it would be no surprise.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

I just don't see us drafting an offensive linemen in the first round this year. I think we are solid at Tackles, obviously they need some improvement but I think they both have solid talent. Also lets remember that Shanahan does not often spend a high draft pick on offensive linemen. For fun here is a list of his drafts at Denver by year. I only included the name of the first rounders after that just their positions:

96-1st John Mobley LB, DB, RB, DL
97-1st Trevor Pryce DT, No other picks
98-1st Marcus Nash WR, DB, QB, RB
99-1st Al Wilson LB, DB, WR, RB
00-1st Delta Oneal CB, LB, DB, WR
01-1st Willie Middlebrooks CB, DL, DL ,OL
02-1st Ashley Lelie WR, RB, DL, DB
03-1st George Foster OL, LB, RB, DL
04-1st DJ Williams LB, RB, WR, DB
05-1st Darrent Williams DB, DB, DB, RB
06-1st Jay Cutler QB, TE, WR, LB
07-1st Jarvis Moss DE, DL, OL, DL

Ok so through the first 4 rounds of 12 drafts Shanahan has drafted exactly 2 offensive linemen and spent a first round pick on them only once. It has been stated many times that Shanahan prefers to draft his OL and RBs in the later rounds. Unless I am missing someone in College I cant think of a Free Safety worthy of a frist round pick. So I would guess, based on need and Shanahan's past tendencies that we go after a DL or WR in the first.

Of course this is assuming he will have a lot of input into who we draft. I am hoping he and Bruce Allen will work well together.

Your forgetting about his 08 draft with Ryan Clady and our boy Lichtensteiger.

Plus your stats are WAYYY off of O-linemen taken under Shanny
1st rounders-Ryan Clady, George Foster
2nd-Lennie Friedman
3rd-Ryan Harris, Dan Neil
4th-Cooper Carlisle, Ben Hamilton, and our Very own Kory Lichtensteiger

I agree with you that we will for sure not draft an O-lineman this year though. We just got williams last year and traded for brown, who I'm sure we will keep around in hopes that his poor year this year was a result of coming off of surgery and getting used to the right side.

If Jake Locker drops (which I find to be unlikely considering the Cardinals, 49ers, Vikings are dying for a QB...plus the Panthers, Bengals, Bills, Browns all have a strong possibility of taking one), I would expect us to take him. His athleticism, arm, and the fact that he is coming from a losing program are all reminiscent of Jay Cutler, who Shanahan had a very good relationship with.

More realistically though, I think that we are going to get a D-lineman with our first pick considering that none of our starters are starting material (Haynesworth does not start...or even play that much).

The only other two positions I could see us taking with our 1st are WR and RB. I know Shanny is notorious for taking late round RB's, but I remember him saying that if Jay Cutler had not been there in 06, he would have take Maroney, which tells us he is willing to take a RB in the 1st. Our offense needs a jump start. RBs and WRs are known to be taken to get that spark. I think Mark Ingram is the most likely scenario for an offensive skill player player being picked. I predict us going either 6-10 or 7-9. This year I think that will put us in the 10-14 range. That seems too late for AJ Green and too early for any other WR.

If only somehow we could lose the rest of our games this year we would be better off. Yea it would hurt this year, but a 5-11 record will score us a nice offensive weapon (QB or AJ Green) that we could use for the next 12 years.

Damn it, didnt include 08 because I am an idiot and forgot that he presided over that draft. Also with Carlisle instead of doing what I said and posting the first 4 rounds I posted the first 4 picks not rounds. I was working off of NFL Draft Tracker Denver Broncos, 1995 to 2010 - FF Today

My fault I should have used more than one source!!!

I hear you.....I am concered because we are limited in our number of picks this year (1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th)...not addressing the OL (our most glaring need) is risky. If the talent pool is limited with OL...then draft one in the 1st round at least. It is hard for me to watch our OL suck every game for us NOT to address it....but i will concede my point IF and only IF there are NO steller OL when we pick (other than LT). I believe we may fall right in the middle of the pack (10-21) because we can only get to 10-6 after winning the rest of our games........ok im done....just have to wait and see now.

I'm picking up what you're throwing down. One issue is the FA OL class isn't that strong this year. Maybe Davin Joseph at G? So that may force our hand, or maybe next year Brown is healthy, Capers and/or Cook step up, and so on? Tough to say at this point, I agree we need to improve the line. Don't know if we need to throw all our draft eggs into the OL basket though.

The buzz at the moment is that have their eye on a LB in free agency. I haven't been able to figure out who that is though

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

Oh and the huge (pun intended) wild card in all this, and I think I mentioned him a few weeks ago is Big Mike Williams. He's apparently well on his way to a full recovery and he was supposed to be our starting RG this year. If he's healthy you can probably pencil him in as a starter for us in 2011

I hate to see london go (whenever it is time)....but we do have to address the middle/Inside LB position(not over OL as we already addressed...lol). HB Blades is not going to cut it......we need a Derrick Johnson/Al Wilson(before the neck injury). We have so many needs....i guess 10 years of ignorance will do that

Yeah, I've been thinking that this could be Shanahan's next Culter pick. Wouldn't be to bad long term. Locker has a strong arm, extremely mobile, and apparently he's accurate. On top of that McNabb is injury prone and a former projected #1 overall pick that can move and cover any pass protection issues wouldn't make a bad developmental prospect to ride the pine for the next 3 or 4 years. Unlike most raw QB's Locker would actually have a chance to develop.

Plus right now Mallet and Newton have a chance of being selected in front of him. If Andrew Luck declares then that will all but guarantee Locker sliding during the draft. Of course Luck has said he wants to finish his degree and with a rookie wage scale about to be put in place he won't have the $75 million temptation that other #1 picks have had. Plus he'd be going to Buffalo. Or maybe Carolina which wouldn't be a bad deal with Cowher coaching. Crap I don't want the NFC to have their own Peyton Manning, God knows we have no defense.

I feel bad for missing out on Bradford last year but Williams certainly made for a nice consolation prize and hopefully a year in the system will help McNabb tremendously. Maybe in free agency they add a reciever or two that doesn't let the ball volley from his hands into the hands of his opponent.

Quote:
Accuracy - 2 -Needs to learn to put some more air under some of his deep balls. But overall accuracy is very good, especially considering how many times he is unable to follow through on throws due to pressure. He shows good touch on dump offs, flares, etc. Outstanding timing on comeback throws and is not afraid to lead the receiver back to the ball. Deep out accuracy and zip is excellent, as are accuracy on curl routes and square ins.

Release/Arm Strength - 1 - Keeps ball high in drop, gets the ball out quickly and uses an over-the-top delivery. Can drill the ball into tight windows that most college QBs can't fit it through. Can drive the ball down the field with a low trajectory when necessary. Has proven capable of getting good velocity on his throws when playing in wind, rain, snow, etc.

Pocket Mobility - 2 - Excellent athlete. Gets set quickly and has really developed a great tempo to his drops under new coaches. Feels the pressure coming most of the time and has the quickness to buy plenty of second-chance opportunities. Two questions he needs to answer in 2009: does he roll to his right too frequently when pressure comes, and will he learn to better-protect his body by sliding, diving and getting out of bounds?
So yeah, it probably won't be the most popular bandwagon this offseason but I'm now on record as wanting Locker to be a long term developmental prospect.

Has to be an ILB right because right now I'm under the impression that they couldn't be happier with Orakpo and Alexander on the wings.

Do you mean Paul Posluszny because that wouldn't be to bad of a pickup. Smart hardworking player that can take on blocks. Plus you remember what happened the last time we signed a Buffalo Linebacker.

I think it'd be interesting if the team drafts another Auburn QB.
