I think that too. In that situation you just can't let a receiver get behind you so easily. Williams should have been taking a step or two back from the get-go.

But shouldn't a coach (like Haslett) be ensuring that everyone is doing that?

No according to alot of people here the DC has absolutely nothing to do with a players position on the field or which way he runs or moved or anything. It is not something they practice or watch film on or ever even talk about alittle bit. Lol.

Re: Raheem Morris

Haslett not the problem with Redskins' D - NFC East Blog - ESPN

What the coaching staff did not do is actually go out and cover the receivers themselves. And unfortunately for them, neither did the defensive backs assigned to Cruz. Cornerback Josh Wilson let Cruz get behind him, which he never should have done at that spot on the field. And safety Madieu Williams, astoundingly, did the same. So when Manning's pass found Cruz, the only hope either Redskin had was to catch him. And there was no chance of that happening.

So to those calling for the firing of defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, I pose this question: Who do you propose as his replacement, and would that person somehow be able to make Madieu Williams a better NFL safety?

Of course he wouldn't.

The Redskins' secondary is a wreck. The two players they hoped would start for them at safety haven't played a single snap this season. Tanard Jackson got hit with a season-long drug suspension on cutdown day, and Brandon Meriweather has suffered through a series of injuries that have delayed his Redskins debut until some time in the future. That means their best safety is Williams, who's a really good guy and gets the defense but doesn't have the physical skills at this point in his career to actually play it. The rest of the safety crew is Reed Doughty, DeJon Gomes and Jordan Pugh. What this means is, when you call for double coverage at the end of a game like this and you're assigning a safety as part of that against one of the best receivers in the league, you're not working with top-level options.

DC call the defense. You can position anyway you like.. You wanna fake like you are blitzing to show a different look? You cover the way you are comfortable. As long as you are in position when the ball is snapped.

I'm sure Haslett would of liked to be out there and moving Williams around by the hips.

This was not a fumble or a int or something that a coach really cant help. This was a player who was completely out of position from the get go - it stinks of poor practice/ coaching.

It seems like people think we have Ed Reed and Polamalu back there. We have basically scrubs back there playing safety. I'm not giving M. Williams a pass, because he f'ed up big time. But I don't think Haslett OR Morris is responsible for that last play of the game.

Why the hell would a safetey even think about blitzing in an obvious passing down when there is one minute left and the only thing you cant do is get beat long? Oh wait - because hasletts blitz schemes are usually called at the most in opportune times of a game. He must have been used to it. Haz always has stunk as a dc and always will. Dont base your opinion on what i say look at his track record. Its all public knowledge. Im totally done arguing about whether haz is the rite man for the job. This is insane. If we fired his ass today he would never get another job in the nfl again. That should tell u sonething.

Meh, it stinks of a player who blew his assignment to me.

The coaches aren't on the sidelines with xbox controllers moving guys around.

Re: Raheem Morris

To be honest it looked like the D backs thought Cruz was going to cut to make 1st down then he just ran by them.

When a coach calls for a double cover on one guy and that guy beat both players, it's not on the coach...lol Haslett made the right call, the execution failed horribly which is why I think we'll be seeing less and less of Williams and more Dhall at FS.

Couldn't agree more. Haslett was handed turds and asked to turn them into gold. Not gonna happen with any DC.

It's the same thing with Kyle S. last year being asked to run an offense with Grossman and Beck. I mean, c'mon. This year he's given a top QB and the results are there. Doesn't take a genius to see talent makes the scheme go.

Re: Raheem Morris

My main issue w/ Haslett is he's always giving wr's cushions in the red zone. He ALWAYS does this. Why? Less field to defend, jam the wr's and make them work to get open because there's less field to defend. We always let wr's release off the line in the red zone. Makes no sense. Cruz was wide open on one in the end zone and Eli flat out missed an easy throw.

They gave a Quarter look, but were playing for the option route. The Giants actually ran an option route..

It was a great call, just piss poor execution.

You take what I say out of context. I'm not saying he should of showed blitz. I'm saying that the alignment means everything when confusing defenses, and if you are showing your hand before the cards are played.. Well, you might as well fold.
