Rookie year, ok not terrible.

In 2018 he got hurt second half of year, but was considered have a top 5 TE year. He graded out at 89 on PFF “elite”. Was on pace 56 catches and over 900 yards receiving.

Last year was a coaching change and new offense which doesn’t feature the TE. Still not a terrible year while still splitting time with Brate.

Guy was regarded highly coming out and obviously needs a change of scenery

I’m kinda lost how some think he’s not needed on this team? Have you seen the roster and look at Howard salary cap number...it’s nothing.

Unfortunately, Howard struggled to find a niche in Bruce Arians’ offense, at least when it comes to personal statistics. Howard had just 34 receptions for 459 yards and one touchdown. His best catch of the year didn’t even come during an NFL game, but rather an MLB game. Howard even found himself in Arians’ doghouse early in the season for his lackluster play.

But, according to ESPN, Howard did a great job in one particular area this year. In their 2019 advanced statistics awards, ESPN said that according to the stats, Howard was the league’s best pass-blocking tight end.

“Bucs coach Bruce Arians never relied on Howard all that much as a receiver this season. But the young tight end did play a role in the passing game with a 98% PBWR (pass block win rate).”

I would pick up Howard in a second. He was a stud in college, injuries and being drafted by a not so good team before Arians was a bad combo.

The Buccaneers had discussions in February about trading Howard to Washington in exchange for left tackle Trent Williams, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports.

The teams obviously were unable to reach an agreement at the time, but Tampa Bay's recent acquisition of Rob Gronkowski could lead to reduced trade demands for Howard, who can be kept under team control through 2021 via the fifth-year option on his rookie contract. The Bucs face a May 4 deadline to decide on that option, assuming the 25-year-old tight end remains on their roster. A trade with Washington would still make sense, but it would be tougher for Tampa to absorb Williams' large contract now that Gronkowski accounts for a sizable portion of the cap space that was remaining after the team signed quarterback Tom Brady. The Bucs might prefer compensation in the form of draft picks.

So why would the Bucs take anything less than a 3rd?

Has OJ made some noise? thretened to hold out? Anything to make moving him a team need?

Would OJ play with us without an extension?

Hmmmm .... I'm not sure about that. His college stats are pedestrian.

4 years -- 7 TD's -- 2 of which came in the college national championship against a Clemson team who obviously decided to cover the better Bama weapons.

2013 - 10 games - 14 receptions - 2 TDs
2014 - 9 games - 17 receptions - 0 TDs
2015 - 12 games - 38 receptions - 2 TDs
2016 - 15 games - 45 receptions - 3 TDs


I wouldn't trade for him. But I'd pick him up on a one year prove it deal.

Cameron Brate on the other hand .... he'd be worth a trade.

So they don't have to roster him and pay him for two years, perhaps? They've signed Gronk and seem to like Brate more than Howard, so he seems a bit expensive for a #3 TE. I read that they've already picked up the 5th year option on him. I'm guessing that was to possibly make him more attractive to a potential trade partner.

It's hard to believe that we haven't drafted a TE since Sprinkle in 2017. Not 2020, 2019, or 2018 - and now look at us.

Meanwhile the Browns add Hooper, draft Harrison Bryant in the 4th, and pick up Njoku's 5th year option.

Saw a report that the Bucs did pick up OJ’s 5th year option. Doesn’t look like they are trying hard to get rid of him. Arians was interviewed recently and made a comment about why wouldn’t they like having that many good tight ends? I don’t foresee him going anywhere. Gronk did miss time with injuries before he retired.

Yeah Gronk is coming back from retirement so I don't see the issue with keeping a 25 years old solid TE for them.

Brate or Howard would automatically jump to our number 1 TE.

The question is not taking either of them on the team, its do we offer a pick or wait it out for 1 of them to get released?

I'd do a 4th for either 1 of them. Anything more I'd hold my water.

Personally I'd hold off offering picks for either of them. Firstly, if we are looking to round out the roster to becoming truly challenging next season we want to build our pool of picks, not trade them away. I agree with the predictions we'l be about 8-8 next year so likely mid to high round picks, so we could be trading away good picks (even a 4th rd) to teams for average players.

Secondly, sooner or later I reckon one of them will be released, if only for cap reasons. TB, I believe, have little space to work with especially after signing Brady and Gronk. Having 3 good TE's on the roster with other weaknesses makes no sense so I see them freeing up a slot and cap room for more signings. From what I read they won't free up much space with either contract, but...

Does OJ's 5th year option makes him more valuable in a trade for them?
