Anyway, I agree on Cousins, let's see if he can put that "unclutch" narrative to sleep this year, but a) he'll need his defense to stop shitting the bed, b) this offense still needs to take another step to get some respect, it still doesn't feel like they control and dominate like maybe they should IMO.

Re: Around the NFL Week 17
If we win tomorrow and the lions and hawks lose we are basically in. All 3 are possible too.
If we lose it’s a wrap and start Howell v Dallas Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Nah nah nah. You wanna see what we got. The coaches already know what we got. Tape don't lie - if he isn't balling in practice I don't want to see him in a game. If he has no pocket presence in practice, if his footwork is sloppy and his throws are inaccurate and he has more turnovers than Heinicke I don't even want to see him active for a game. The grass isn't always greener. Just to add on - who is the most recent top 10 qb in the NFL today to be drafted in the 4th round or later? It's Kirk right? It took him 3 seasons, including half a season of mediocre play before it finally clicked and he started balling (I was at the You Like That game against TB too). Some of you guys are too impatient.

BUT if we're out of it already, say down a fair bit against Dallas by the half and lost to Cleveland, I'd say give him the 2nd half. Whether or not he's a potential #1, we have to see if he's a good #2 at least. If so, then it gives us more options next year. We can let TH go, release Wentz (and maybe re-sign on a better deal?) and/or look at the draft. If he has shown issues in practice, as you surmise, they'd not want to start him, but also would want to keep him around if he showed potential. If he's plain bad likely he wouldn't be on the roster at all by now. Without any game time, practice is only going to exhibit 60-70% of his potential, so we just don't know yet. If he has a chance at all, he has to have some meaningful game time, whether that's the end of this season or more exposure next preseason. Ideally, Wentz gets us into the playoffs and Howell is #2 for next year, being groomed to take over. |

Re: Around the NFL Week 17
If Wentz wins the next 2 games and potentially wins a WC game then it would be tough to not bring him back next yr BUT at a cheaper price.

Re: Around the NFL Week 17
I don't think Howell is straight bad, he did show some things against unemployed people in the preseason. There was a good place to start him before the team started winning, but Ron wanted to try to get wins to keep his job and thought TH gave a better chance back then, and he was probably right. Since then it's been a close race to try and make it to the postseason, so again, he wants whatever extra 1% he can get to win games.
If we're out of it or next preseason, I imagine we'll see more, and hopefully it is an open competition between him and whoever gets brought in (or re-signed). I'm not against Wentz at a (much) cheaper deal or a draft pick... there's no obvious answer at QB for next year (which kind of sucks). If TH is back, it HAS to be as a backup (I imagine that would be a "we're potentially throwing a year away to see if Howell can do it"). Fixing the OL should vastly improve the running game and also give QBs longer in the pocket, which should hopefully be enough to get to 24ppg. |

Let's go Kurt!
Don't really have much hope in the Bears or Jets on the road versus the Lions and Seahawks, respectively.

Re: Around the NFL Week 17
Man I don't know how I'd feel about a Heinicke/Howell combo for the team next year. Heinicke is a very good backup and if we can keep him as a back up I am all for it, but I feel we need a QB real bad just like Elaine needs a short stop.

My preference might be absolutely wrong. I'm open to anything other than the same 3 guys all being back next year. Wentz or Heinicke needs to go. I like Howell more than most. So that is the main thing behind my preference. Howell, draft pick, and reasonably priced vet would be my ideal situation.

Re: Around the NFL Week 17
That is where I am leaning. Howell, 1st or 2nd round pick if it grades right and not a reach, and a reasonable vet
