I do beleive one of them he practically handed to the defensive lineman and he ran for a TD, eventually costing us the game.

Re: Portis vs. Betts

One thing that I love about Betts is his hands. IMO he's the perfect 2nd and short running back.

We run the PA, look deep, and if it's not there, we dump off to Betts who can make a play out of it. That's a luxury that a lot teams covet.

His fumbling is definitely a reason for major concern, and something that must be addressed during the off-season. I definitely won't be looking forward to the possibility of more fumbles than touchdowns. That will not fly.

Re: Portis vs. Betts

After carefully looking over Tiki's, Portis', and Betts' stats. I really don't see cause for panic.

  • Tiki's fumbles: 3,1,5,9,8,9,9,5,1,3 avg- 5.3
  • Clinton's fumbles: 5,3,5,3,0 avg- 3.2
  • Ladell's fumbles: 2,0,0,3,6

He's had issues, and it's cause for concern, but nothing more than that. The 6 is bad, but not necessarily indicative of a trend. Does anyone know where to find his college stats. I was able to find some, but couldn't find fumbles.

Re: Portis vs. Betts

Let's look at TD/Fumble ratio:

Portis *52/16
Betts *9/11

*does not include rushing or special teams.

That would make one of us.. His fumbles are at the worst times that cost us games.

Yeah, he had a few backbreaking fumbles last season. I don't know that you can say any one play in any game "cost the team the game," but Ladell definitely cost the team a few chances to win games late. Also, that fumble in the Giants game at the end of the season, was just an example of what he did last year...ran well, the team builds a good drive and the he coughed it up in Giants territory, absolutely a killer.

One of them that I was refering to was against the Cleveland Browns. Portis landed on top of a pile of players and fumbled the ball. I know the rule that since he never physically touched the ground that he was not considered down, however his foreward progress was stopped and the whistle should have been blown. That is my percecption and not the percecption of the officials. Maybe I had my beer and Redskins goggles on, but that was my take on the situation.

Re: Portis vs. Betts

I think tiki barber had a fumbling prob and was able to overcome it. Give Betts a break. Portis did fumble 5 times and the cleveland and Giants one were horrible ones. Especially the browns game. First play after the half.

What do Tiki Barber and Betts have in common?

Nothing.

Why do people insist on bringing up Tiki? Is Betts changing the way he grips the ball? NO

Is Betts going to be the feature back going into the season? NO

Is Betts going to win the rushing title? NO

Is Betts going to be a Hall of Fame candidate. NO

Do not mention Tiki and Betts in the same sentence. It drips with ignorance.

Are you really still not getting this?

They both fumble. That was the comparison. That is what they have in common. No-one was saying Betts is as good as Tiki. No one implied he was going to be in the hall of fame. The comparison is simply that they fumble, a lot.

If one running back can over come a vice, it's certainly possible for another one to do the same.

Obviously you are not getting it.

If you want to compare Tiki from 3 years ago and earlier than, yes, it might make some sense to compare him to Betts (even though he had some very good TD years which Betts may never have). Barber of the last couple of was exceptional at holding the ball (as long as the Tarantula wasn't beating him up).

When someone blurts out Tiki Barber, I think of the guy who was one of the best backs in football the last two years. A guy who fixed his fumbling problem and turned into an MVP candidate. What has Betts done to make anyone think that he has fixed anything?

I hate to break this to people, but Tiki fixing his fumbling problem isn't something that just anybody can do. To be able to ignore years of training and improve yourself like that is an exception, not a rule.
