If I ran the Redskins...

I would take a rather drastic approach this offseason and look to clear off as many of the bloated deals off our cap that we can. Even if it means taking a hit in the short term, I would like to see the front office make the total commitment to building this team through the draft and we need to trim some fat. Guys like Springs, Marcus W., Griff... some key veterans need to go and we need to get this team younger!

The move to bring Jason Taylor here for a #2 was a horrible mismanagement of resources by Vinny. Just horrible, and it showed that when the chips are down Vinny can't help himself and ends up making a bad decision. Just imagine what that #2 could have been for us this year. A starter along the offensive line? A starter along the defensive line? A starting LB? Well, I'm assuming alot because knowing Vinny we would probably just draft another WR. :vomit:

Re: If You Ran the Redskins...

I would field a new line-up for the rest of the season:

LT-Heyer LG- Kendall C- Crummey(doh!) Rabach RG-Rinehart -RT-Fabini/Clark

RB-Portis for a little while then Betts then give Rock the 3rd/4th qtrs

WR-X Devin Thomas/Malcolm Kelly Z-Moss/Thomas Slot-Moss/ARE

TE-Cooley/Fred Davis

Defense:

DE-Carter/Chris Wilson DT-Lorenzo Alexander DT-Golston DE-Evans/Boschetti/Rob Jackson

SAM-Rocky/Fincher Mike-London Will-H.B./Campbell

FS-Landry/Moore/Springs SS-Moore/

CB-Hall/Springs/Tryon CB-Rogers/Tryon

ST:

PR: Hall/Cartwright/Thomas

KR: Thomas/Tryon

Re: If You Ran the Redskins...

I've been giving this a lot of thought and here's what I'd do, if I ran the 'Skins:

1. I wouldn't panic. We have some strengths and some weaknesses. We aren't as good as we looked when we were beating the 'Girls and the Iggles on the road but we aren't as bad as we looked against Baltimore or Cinny either. Blowing up the roster is unnecessary and if we ditch Zorn after one season, then we will be as fickle as the media likes to portray and it will be a long time before we have any stability in the coaching staff. We'd be well on our way to becoming the Raiders.

2. I'd focus in free agency and in the draft in strengthening our weakness rather than trying to make a big splash or blowing up the roster. I'd go for the best young OL and DL available and do what it takes to sign them. We're good enough at finessing the cap that we ought to be able to add one starter on each side and some much needed depth. In the draft, I'd go for more line help.

3. If we don't have a lineman ranked high enough on our board when we pick in the first, then I'd look for another defensive playmaker at linebacker or in the secondary.

4. Someone made the point above (and I think it was a good one) that in terms of coaching staff, the only change I'd make would be to let Zorn start to bring in more of his people on offense and let them help implement his system.

It will allow him to stay here, and compete for a starting role. If he thinks he can do better elsewhere, I doubt that, but more power to him.

1a. Announce the release of defensive backs coach Jerry Gray, Receivers coach Stan Hixon, and offensive line coach Joe Bugel.

2. Extend the contracts of Anthony Montgomery, Carlos Rogers, and Jason Campbell for 4-6 more seasons with larger-end signing bonuses.

3. Release Shawn Springs, Fred Smoot, James Thrash, Casey Rabach, and Todd Yoder. This will create an issue at corner, but right now, I feel like Griffin, Taylor, and Marcus Washington will all have a role on the 2009 Redskins. Springs probably won't play a 16 game season again, and offered the choice between extending him to lessen the cap hit, and moving on, I think we move on.

4. Announce the move of Jon Jansen from T to C. Colt Brennan becomes the 2nd QB, while Todd Collins stays on as the 3rd QB.

5. Chad Rinehart is the opening day starter at RG. Randy Thomas becomes a utility lineman, who works some at Center to help us out in a pinch.

6. We draft one of the many offensive tackles in this class with our first round pick, and he competes right away to start with Heyer.

7. We add a defensive lineman in the third round of the draft, a running back in the 5th, and our Center of the future in the 6th.

8. Redskins re-sign Leigh Torrence in camp after he gets cut by New Orleans, and make a play for Oakland Franchise CB Nnamdi Asomugha (probably an unsuccessful one), but Texans CB Dunta Robinson would be a nice consolation. Justin Tryon rounds out the depth. Redskins sign New Orleans WR Devery Henderson.

9. Corneilius Griffin, Jason Taylor, and Marcus Washington are all potential training camp releases, depending on how the youth does and how well they take care of their bodies in the offseason.

while I'm not sure how much I agree with this I will just say, do we really need to wait for Torrrence to be cut? Did the Saints pick him up off waivers and assume the rest of his contract or did they sign him after he cleared for the rest of the season.

Re: If You Ran the Redskins...

Veterans that we seriously need to look to get rid of:

Springs
Washington
Jason Taylor
Griffin
Rabach
McIntosh (his knees will never allow him to reach his true potential)

I would consider re-signing Hall at a reasonable deal to replace Springs, but he's certainly not worth breaking the bank over. Rogers inability to catch INTs is a glaring issue and I was considering putting him on the list of guys to get rid of, but we probably can't afford to replace both starting CBs in one offseason.

Both lines need desperate attention through the draft and free agency.

Special teams also some big time help at punter and kicker. Spend some loot here in free agency and let's get some capable guys in here already.

The only reason I would consider releasing Taylor is if we used that 8 million in cap space to sign a guy like Suggs or Gross (maybe even both considering that the first year of the contract would have a cap number around $2-$4 million each)

Re: If You Ran the Redskins...

There are a lot of good ideas in this thread but seriously any "If you ran the Redskins" response would have to start with getting rid of VC. He is the only constant other then Snyder in the last 10 years. Regardless of his merrit for the job everyone in this organization has taken the fall for the lack of results except him. I would remove him and hire a proven football man and then pick up with the rebuilding process.

What does "proven football man" even mean?

I don't know...that's TV talk...how about anyone different whether proven or not. This guy has had 10 years...we have even replaced the secretaries since Snyder took over and I don't think it's their fault.

The only time I ever felt like the Redskins were truely going in the right direction since Snyder has owned the team was during the second half of the season Marty was here. VC was gone and Snyder was in the background and the team really seemed like it had a plan and was heading somewhere. And I am probably the biggest Gibbs fan in the world but even during the years he was here you always knew in the back of your mind that he was going to leave eventually and we would be left with VC & Dan again.

I want Suisham gone the day after the season ends. I would not even let him come to camp to compete for the job. He fools you by kicking well in August and September but by the time the leaves fall you are left with the same old Suisham and it's too late to do anything about it. That's why I don't even want him in camp, becasue he will fool them into giving him the job again.

yeah I said address kicker.

My main focus was on the bigger name guys we have who are not earning their keep. Fabini, Thrash, and Smoot are all fine to me as depth.
