Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft
I trust Cam Newton as a pocket passer. I think, given lofty draft status, he's bound to develop his skills from the pocket. I'm just not sure he'll ever be good enough on the move to justify a first round pick. We all know he can run in the open field, but when he's 28 and needing to slide to protect himself, will he be anything but a turnover waiting to happen once flushed? I'm not convinced.
Newton isn't Tebow. He may look prettier than Tebow from a passing standpoint, but he's not nearly as accomplished coming out. It would not be hard to justify a first round pick on Cam Newton, because if you have a guy who can set up in the pocket, deliver the football, take a hit, you'll always have a chance to get the quarterback. But I haven't heard one guy who EXPECTS Cam Newton to be a top ten quarterback in the NFL. And that's the thing to keep in mind here: whether you like Newton or not, people have tempered expectations for players like him.

Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft
If I were Cam Newton, I would follow Tebow's lead & start working w/a QB coach that can fine tune my footwork & mechanics. Maybe that's not as viable a project to work on w/1 person like Tebow did w/his throwing motion, but just by doing something other than working out, it would up his stock.
He could get his dad to hire a qb coach.

Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft
After watching Newton's workout yesterday I'm convinced that this man wants to be the best he can be. And he looked damn good too. I know it's alot easier when there's not an actual pass rush, however he looked remarkable. I just hope he's still there at number 10 when we pick.

Did you bother to listen to his interview? Did you bother to listen to the details about the amount of work he's putting into his off season regimen? Based on what I heard and observed, his actions convinced me that this kid wants to be the best he can be. |

If I was a GM and was looking for a QB I wouldn't even attend the pro day workouts. Sure it's useful if you want to get a look at a LB prospect, but evaluating a QB in a choreographed rehearsal is close to useless and is probably one of the reasons these talent evaluating clowns are always blowing it on bust QB's. That's one of the reasons I am pretty intrigued by Jake Locker. Go watch the guy play in real lives games against the pro farm team USC over the last two years. Thats how I evaluate college QB's. |

I'm going on record and saying that whoever picks sCam Newton in the first round is going to be set back 3-5 years. Said the same thing about Tebow, and Vince Young too. |

Is this going a bit too far too soon?

Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft
At the very least Russell didn't have even close to the charisma that you get with a guy like Newton. Still I don't know how Russell was looked at in terms of preparation going into the draft but everything I've heard about Newtons prep and ability to accept coaching is very good. Not Peyton Manning good but certainly enough to warrant a closer look while not worrying to much about him getting lazy after payday.

Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft
So I haven't been following this thread, but is it a foregone conclusion that we're drafting Cam?
