What the coaching staff did not do is actually go out and cover the receivers themselves. And unfortunately for them, neither did the defensive backs assigned to Cruz. Cornerback Josh Wilson let Cruz get behind him, which he never should have done at that spot on the field. And safety Madieu Williams, astoundingly, did the same. So when Manning's pass found Cruz, the only hope either Redskin had was to catch him. And there was no chance of that happening.

So to those calling for the firing of defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, I pose this question: Who do you propose as his replacement, and would that person somehow be able to make Madieu Williams a better NFL safety?

Of course he wouldn't.

The Redskins' secondary is a wreck. The two players they hoped would start for them at safety haven't played a single snap this season. Tanard Jackson got hit with a season-long drug suspension on cutdown day, and Brandon Meriweather has suffered through a series of injuries that have delayed his Redskins debut until some time in the future. That means their best safety is Williams, who's a really good guy and gets the defense but doesn't have the physical skills at this point in his career to actually play it. The rest of the safety crew is Reed Doughty, DeJon Gomes and Jordan Pugh. What this means is, when you call for double coverage at the end of a game like this and you're assigning a safety as part of that against one of the best receivers in the league, you're not working with top-level options.
I completely concur. But I still say Raheem Morris is at fault. The Redskins need a faster and quicker and YOUNGER FS back there roaming the field

Agreed. I'd go further than we don't have enough talent to we don't have any talent in the secondary. None of our starters would be starters on a good defense. (Maybe Josh Wilson as a # 2). I mean Victor Cruz just ran straight and got past 2 guys, with Williams literally just staring at him as he ran by. Williams also annoys me because he never plays the ball, always tries for the big hit. There was a play in the game where Manning fired a ball that zipped by Williams but Williams was running at the receiver full speed to try and blow him up. Williams has to go! Rather have Gomes play the rest of the year and see if he can improve or if he also needs to be replaced next year.

I think Gomes time has passed. He had his chances and didn't get it done. Hopefully Merriweather gets in the game and stabilizes a bad situation.

I think that is most likely accurate. But we know for SURE that Williams time has passed. I'd rather let the younger guy play out the year and see if there is any improvement, like as in can he stick on the team next year as a backup/depth guy, or does he also need to be off the team. I'd like to see Meriweather, hopefully when he comes back he skips warmups. No accidents.

I hope the scouting department is already looking. I like the free safety from Pitt named Kwan Williams. Sean Taylor/Ed Reed type that stalks the football. Williams would certainly be an upgrade over the Williams we already have.

Re: Raheem Morris

I think the single biggest problem with the passing defense is that Haslett is too predictable. Both Bradford and Dalton had expressed anticipation for attacking any defense that Haslett showed and welcomed the blitze packages that he called. The Giants also were prepared, according to an ESPN breakdown, of the alignment with Cruz in the slot to make it an automatic Go route because Madieu(FS) would take the out and Wilson(CB) the dig. It was a no brainer before the snap.

So while players make the plays or not, the opposition also gameplans the coordinators for situational tendencies. This doesn't absolve the defenders because they know they have to make the adjustments, but it sure seems easier for the opponent when they know what's coming.

Haslett's defenses have consistantly ranked in the bottom half of the league, and typically the longer he stays, the worse his team gets. It's obvious to me that a change is needed, and the sooner the better, before the season completely slips away.

Another solid post jdc. There's no doubt Eli to Cruz is one of the better pairs in pro football. Who's to say Williams would have made the play had he been positioned correctly before the snap? At least he'd have the chance...

But it was the offense that really lost this game. What comes next there?

I have come to the conclusion that you are the worse poster here.

The setup before the snap was a organized double team to anticipate the option route. The Giants ran the option route, and the play call for the defense was perfect. If you watch the play.. Williams was stoned and his feet flat. So Cruz ran right by him..
