Mike Shanahan: Devin Thomas must commit to being a pro
On Saturday, Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan made the decision to release third-year receiver Devin Thomas. On Sunday, following the Redskins' 16-13 overtime win, Shanahan explained his reasoning.

"I sat down and talked to Devin many times and told him what he needed to do to be a pro football player," Shanahan said, "both on and off of the football field. And if he does do that, both on and off of the football field, he'll have a chance to play in the National Football League. But until he does that -- he's got the talent. He sure does. But he's going to have to commit to being a pro."

Shanahan did not elaborate on how Thomas wasn't conducting himself as a pro.

Thomas was on the field for only one offensive possession in the team's first four games. He was used primarily as a kickoff returner. The Redskins used two returners in his place Sunday: Chad Simpson and Brandon Banks both lined up deep on kickoffs

Banks had two returns for a total of 33 yards, Simpson had 27 yards in his lone return and Byron Westbrook also returned once for six yards.

Wonder what he means by this.. Was he having a hard time with the playbook? Smoot said earlier he seemed like he was putting the extra time in during preseason.. Maybe he just gave up and was pissed off about playing time?

Armstrong has been money, but I still would have liked more YOUTH at the position. I'm still sad that DT was a bust. Maybe Kelly can pick it up next year, if he ever gets healthy..

I could be wrong but I think DT may have been a partier as well. Possibly percieved as NOT commited?

I wonder if he just wasn't smart enough to play at the pro level. He was massive in size, strength, and his speed seemed reasonable. I really hope to know why if the story doesnt tell it self by the rest of his career but its not uncommon having players that take partying more serious than acheiving or reaching expected levels.

Did anybody pick him up on waivers? Also, just because he got released by us doesn't mean he's a bust. He can still succeed with somebody else. If he doesn't do anything of note then yeah he will be a bust but he's still got the opportunity, some NFL team might be willing to take a flyer on him.

I'd like to see his career pan out but so far it doesn't look good.

The Rams don't even want him. Linky to PFT.

And -- any chance this is the ULTIMATE motivator for him? For example, Shanahan dumped Banks and brought him back, same with K.Williams. Is there a chance he brings back DT after humiliating him?

Both of those guys were rookies. Banks had fumbling problems. Keiland Williams maybe, but he's still a rookie. Devin is a third year pro.

Boy that's pretty horrible. If a team with Danny Amendola as its' top wideout doesn't want him then it doesn't look good. Well good luck DT.

Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas

don't know how many people were at the game or noticed it, but they always do the crunch of the game, the drive of the game and other crap like that at the stadium. well yesterday the hd play off the game came up and they ran the intro and the intro ended with a still shot of devin thomas, then they didn't show a play they left the still shot of devin up for a good 5 to 10 seconds it was kinda strange. anyone else notice that??

I actually did notice that. It was strange. We were all making jokes that they needed to throw a bomb to DT if we wanted to win.
Really though, I don't think there was any conspiracy or anything, I think it was just a coincidence.

Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas

the article pretty much confirms nothing. something went down between dt and the shannys and they couldn't get past it. i really don't like that what appears to be personal dislikes made their way into a bussiness decision but so be it, what's done is done. dt is one player that i do hope to see suceed in the nfl, i just hope it's not in the nfc east.

Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas

Not sure why it's assumed it was something personal.

Shanahan is questioning his overall commitment to the game on and off the field. Probably has more to do with off the field stuff, like preparing himself in the film room, knowing the play book in and out, basically the same things that were an issue ever since he was drafted. Getting caught sleeping in a team meeting was probably a big strike against him.

Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas

I believe the Friday interview with Lavar was the last strike. If Shanny had multiple conversations about being a pro on and off the field, yet Thomas says he doesn't know why he's not getting on the field, Shanahan must have figured that he would never get through to the kid. Take the hint, and stop investing time in your web site, Twitter, and Facebook, and learn your playbook down cold. Spend extra time in the film room, or running extra routes with McNabb. Shanny said that Devin's talent wasn't the issue, it was all about his commitment. I hope that this is a HUGE wakeup call for Malcolm Kelly to work on the little things that the Shanahans clearly value.
