Re: AMD Phenom Quad Core Processors
I have a question, If I were to completely erase my hard drive, with a de-magatizer, and put that same hard drive back in to my tower would I totaly loose my operating system? So, basicly, is my operating system on my hard drive or on my mother board?
Hard Drive.

Bios is on the motherboard.

So than if I erased my hard drive and re-installed it into my tower my PC would not be able to start?

The physical computer would start just fine, but it wouldn't boot into an operating system.

It would boot to the screen where it finds your keyboard (the black DOS screen) and then would say something like this "Operating System missing." Why would you erase your hard drive with a demagnetizer? Just blow away the partition and reinstall your OS. Unless you're going to have government officials analyzing your computer's hard drive, the chances of someone else retrieving your old files would be slim to none.

For what it's worth, I called AMD and they didn't even question me. They just said "send it to us." So I did... Supposedly they are still trying to determine whether it is a problem with the processor or simply an incompatibility with Vista 64 bit OS, but everyone that has RMA'd theirs and replaced it has not seen the problem... We shall see.

I was asking for a guy at work, his sons computer has a lot of junk and viriuses and he asked me if he could just de-mag his hard drive, or would he loose the OS? I didn't know what would happen so I posted it on here. I talked to him today and he said that he is just going to re-format the hard drive and re-install everything...

Reformat works for everything but the CIA,FBI or NSA going over your computer...lol. No need to defrag. But depending on the age of the pc, it may be smart to upgrade the drive anyway, storage has gotten pretty cheap the last few years...

I am not sure how old his PC is and I am not sure if he really wants to put any money into it. Thanks for your help too...

The best way to ensure a hdd is unreadable is to shred it into a billion pieces. :)

I've got a Q6600 on the way for my new build (oohrah Newegg). I used to build AMD systems but switched to Intel about 2 years ago - they just generally seemed to be outperforming AMD for the most part.

Maybe the tables are about to turn again, who knows. I also like Nvidia better than ATI, so there's another point for Intel.

While we're in the general vicinity of the topic, are they and Mac lovers here?

I've got a real Mac-Windows can of worms brewing in my head. I'm also full of mixed metaphors.

I think the Q6600 is the better processor for gaming, but I don't know... it's close. I had an in for a free professional grade ATI video card worth about $900 so I went AMD, plus I'd been wanting to try an AMD system for a while. So far, not so good.

So, care to share where you're picking up FireGLs for free?
