AMD Phenom Quad Core Processors

Anybody install one of these yet. I went ahead and bought a 9600 BE thinking I'd build an AMD box for the first time. HUGE MISTAKE. There are a huge number of problems with this processor, include a TLB erratum that is not that bad of an issue for non-VMware users, and a large number of chips sold with a defective 3rd core.

If you were considering doing this, don't. Just wanted to send out an FYI to my fellow warpathians.

here's one of many sources:

Phenom Exposed! Shipping with flaky 3rd cores.

Shoot. I thought this thread was a really unique shout-out to ArtMonkDrillz (aka AMD Phenom)

Re: AMD Phenom Quad Core Processors

Hopefully they get the issue fixed. I'm a big AMD chip fan (the other AMD is ok too), as my work and home PCs are AMD based machines.

Re: AMD Phenom Quad Core Processors

what do you mean? Why did I choose to use AMD? I thought the architecture looked pretty cool on the Phenoms. I still do. I just think the execution is pathetic.

Re: AMD Phenom Quad Core Processors

damnit, i've been way too busy at work lately.

now that i have a minute, I'd like to gladly accept my Phenom Quad Core Process award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence. It was a tough journey to get to the top, i had to step on a lot of little people to get here, but now the only way I'll ever give this Quad Core Processor back is if you pry it from my cold dead hands! ˇViva la Revolution!

AMD processors run just as well, if not better than Intel processors, at a lower cost...plus I believe they are easier to overclock.

When I built my home computer about four years ago, I probably saved $100-200 easily by going AMD over Intel. And my setup is still going strong. I wouldn't recommend doing any heavy gaming with it, but for what I need (everyday use, personal web server), it does all I need.

Re: AMD Phenom Quad Core Processors

Yeah, I bought a 1600 XP processor about 5+ years ago and just recently replaced it with another AMD processor. I think the biggest knock is they run hotter than similiar Intel chips which I'm not sure is much of an issue anymore.

My XP 2400+ is still kickin'. Original heatsink and fan, a little thermal paste and it's been going strong.

Re: AMD Phenom Quad Core Processors

I haven't built a computer in awhile, so I'm not up on the latest and greatest top of the line AMD processors. What I can tell you is that I've had the experience of AMD processors being faster than an intel chip of the same processing speed. Of course now, we're counting processing power in number of cores now instead of just speed, but MOST of the time you can't go wrong with AMD. I'll have to read up on that article about the defective core.

Re: AMD Phenom Quad Core Processors

Fair enough, I lean towards Intel cause the newer technology is good, but I lean towards them for good reasons. Go back a couple of years and AMD had the better technology without a doubt, but I think that has changed recently. I was just interested in what others had to say. Thanks for the feedback.

Re: AMD Phenom Quad Core Processors

I have a question, If I were to completely erase my hard drive, with a de-magatizer, and put that same hard drive back in to my tower would I totaly loose my operating system? So, basicly, is my operating system on my hard drive or on my mother board?
