Fall 1986, I was 6 years old, in first grade...in bed asleep. Heard my mom scream out loud, waking me up. I run into my parents' bedroom and proceed to see the replay several times, not quite understanding the impact until years later. I cringe every time I watch it...but like a train wreck, you can't help but look.

They kept showing the injury on the news the night after the game. I kept thinking how weird it was for that player who "never got his jersey dirty" was going to play for us. (Talking about Jay!)

I gained respect (not that they need it) for the PTI gang - who in their "Happy, Happy" bit mentioned very briefly the injury, but said the Joe Theisman is a good man, who isn't celebrating the end of his playing career, so they wouldn't either.

I hereby call a one week moratorium on Wilbon and Kornheiser bashing.

I was 13 watching it live with my parents. Joe had taken us to 2 Superbowls and won 1 of them. It was hard to see it then and hard to see it now. Back in the early 80's he was my favorite player. Had his jersey, his autographed photos etc. Didn't like him in the 90's as he seemed like such an arse. Last few years he's obviously responded to criticism or something cause he's a more objective more pleasant person to listen to. He used to be obnoxious, ego maniac and trying to dominate his announcer counterparts. These days I look forward to him calling a game. Swear we need a new crop of guys for Sundays.

The next day at school my friend had gone to the game and sat in the 8th row or something and said he could hear it break, said it was really loud. When I was 13 the Theismann thing was big big news in Northern VA.

Damn I feel like an old man here. I was 20 watching the game in my first appartment with my future ex wife. Schroeder really took advantage of his oppurtunity losing only one game the rest of the season being that we were 5-5 going into that game.
